Chapter 1: My friend's On The Other Team
I decided to write this book because me and my friends at school were having a leaf war :D
GO MY TEAM 'WEREWOLVES'!!!
It was a clammy day. The ground was wet and soggy, riddled with small puddles after the light shower of the previous night. Patches of murky mud spread across the fog covered fields. The field was dimly lit by the sun, hidden behind thick clouds. I crossed the gloomy expanse over to where I knew my friends would be waiting. I was hoping this year would be a nice, dry fall season for the wars. However it seemed nature wanted both teams to suffer. The wars always started on the same day each year. Last year it started snowing early, luckily the wars were coming to an end, but it almost made Werewolves lose to the Vampires. We were unprepared for the cold, and we had to dig around in the snow to salvage as much leaves as we could. Most of my team caught very nasty colds, some were even nearly fatal.
As I made my way to the giant oak I remembered the package I was carrying on my back. An almost evil grin spread across my face. The Werewolves were four year champions in the wars and we are going to one-up that title to five year champions.
I stopped my train of thoughts as I approached the twisted oak. The flakey leaves already attacking the ground, crunching loudly underfoot. I looked at the miserably small group waiting for me under the thick canopy of brown and dead leaves.
"Taytay, where the fuck is my team?" I greeted my second best friend. She was a mean girl to anyone who she decided she didn't like, which was almost everyone. Her raven black hair was hidden under a red hoodie. She was dabbing at her red nose with a kleenex as she looked up and noticed me. Stuffing the soggy tissue into her hood pocket she answered with a nasly and croaky voice.
"They ditched P. Everyone is too afraid to join after what happened last year, they think we should cancel the games." She wiped her nose as she glanced nervously toward the other three people that were there.
"That's utter bullshit. We were part-taking in the games since we were five! How many ditched?" I was fuming. Those cowards! How dare they break tradition.
"Almost all of them." It was my other good friend that answered this time. Her voice more clear and higher in pitch then Taytay's.
"So this is it? This is our whole team for this year? Just the four of us? We'll get our asses handed to us!" I dropped the backpack I was carrying to the ground and balled up my fists. That's it, there goes our five year championship title.
"There's more coming." It was Soccer that spoke again. Her long, brown hair sparkling with blonde highlights even in the foggy evening.
"Yeah, there's gonna be Yazmyn, Philip and one of his dorky friends" Taytay sniffled and pulled out another Kleenex. Ignoring her loud blowing of the nose I turned to Soccer.
"Philip? Your baby brother?" Both Soccer and Taytay had younger siblings, I was the youngest with two older siblings.
"He's not a baby anymore. He's already ten. He should have been in the games already but you know how my mom is." I nodded. Soccer's parents can be very over protective of their two children. It was a miracle they even let Soccer join the wars at five. Her brother was less lucky.
"And his friend?" Soccer looked over at Taytay as the latter kept making sniffling noises.
"Conner, he's also ten. His brother was in the wars last year, one of the kids that got hospitalized." I cringed at that. I myself had battled with a very high fever and streph throat for a whole month after last year's game.
"How come he never joined before?" It was Marie that spoke this time. Asking the question that was on my mind.
"He was too afraid to. But with his brother being too old to join now his mom forced him to." I nodded as Soccer explained the situation. All the parents in this town had been in the wars when they were kids. You join when you are 5 and stop once you hit the age of 18. This was my last year since I was 17 and my third year as the leader. The only reason I became the leader was beacuse my older sister became too old to join anymore. I noticed something right then.
"Where's Doggy? Don't tell me his parents aren't letting him join this year. He didn't even get sick last year!" I looked towards TayTay for answers as to why my best friend wasn't here. Doggy was a year younger then me and I was planning on making him the leader for next year.
"P, I don't know how to tell you this but, Doggy he.... urhm, well... he kidda..." Marie stumbled over her words as she found interest in the ground.
"He what? Spit it out already." She flinched at my harshness. She was testing my patients and I wasn't in the mood for it.
"He switched teams man. He joined the vamps." Taytay said bitterly. Everyone went silent as I registered what she has told me.
"He what?" I started laughing hoping she was joking.
"He joined up with the vampires P. His parents were worried he would be on a losing team so they switched him over." Soccer mumbled.
"They did what?! What were they thinking?! Doggy has always been on the werewolves team! His brothers and sisters before him were on the werewolves team and his two little brothers were supposed to be as well once they become ready! What kind of bullshittery is this?!" I was shouting but I didn't care. His parents had no right to do this, it broke all the rules of the games. The way we get assigned to our teams has always been clear, a long time ago when our town was first created after World War 3 all the children of the towns folk got together in random teams and started what is now known as the Leaf Wars. Over the centuries our families belonged to one of the two teams. No one liked families from thd other team, no one married someone from the other team, even the adults who weren't part of the leaf wars anymore still stuck to their own team. How could the Lover family just switch sides? They will be shunned by our society. Doggy will be bullied within his new team, no one will trust him. I ran my fingers through my hair as three people approached us. It was Yazmyn and the other two mentioned by Soccer.
"Hey Poky, is it true? The thing with Doggy? That sucks dude, what is his family thinking? That's just messed up" Conner, a scraggly boy with shaggy blonde hair, spoke.
"Shut it Conner, that's unimportant right now. Now that all of us are here P will tell us the plan for this year. Right P?" Taytay barked out. She and Soccer were like my right and left hand, they take control when I'm unable to.
"Speaking of the plan, what's in that bag P?" Soccer pointed to my bag I brought with me.
I just smiled at them as I remembered the secret weapon I brought with me. We might be able to win the war yet.
