Chapter 5

Misery.

That was the one word that could describe how Valt's world had become.

His best friend was gone. His good friends were dying. And there was no one Valt could rely on.

Daigo and Honcho was all he could depend on to get out of the game.

Ken was the Magician. He had brought back numerous people, like Wakiya, who had gotten eliminated, but not once did he bring back Shu.

I've forgotten how long I've been stuck here, Valt thought. He didn't even bother to go to the main room anymore. There was no point.

Game Chat

Server: Last night, one person died.
Ken died from the Secret.

Valt sighed. Too bad Ken didn't tell me who was the other Magician.

Do not despair, Valt.

He jerked. Valtryek! No way! His Bey. You will find a way, Valtryek promised. Its voice faded away. Valt slumped, hope lost. His phone pinged.

Game Chat

Xander: Valt! Are you there?

Honcho: Please be alive.

Daigo: The server said only Ken died last night.

Valt: I'm here.

Ukyo: Good. Why aren't you in the main room?

Valt: What's the point?

Xander: He might be right.

Wakiya: Yes. True. I'm not there.

Honcho: Because we all know you're alive.

Valt: I didn't.

Daigo: Guess the game didn't give you the full message.

Wakiya: Well, now you know.

Ukyo: Ken's last act. He was the Magician.

Valt: I hope it is.

Wakiya: You mean you want Ken to be dead?

Valt: Yes.

Daigo: ...

Honcho: Have you gone crazy?

Daigo: Ken is our friend.

Valt: Really?

Valt: Ken may be your friend, but he isn't mine.

Valt: Not anymore.

Valt: Not after what happened.

Ukyo: You want to tell us what happened?

Valt: No.

Valt: You won't believe me. Even if you promised. 

Honcho: Tell us. Valt. Please.

Xander: We might not believe you, but we'll listen.

Valt: Stop!

Valt: Ken is not my friend anymore. Period.

Valt: You don't need to know anything else.

Daigo: What did Ken ever do to you?

Valt: He knew what I needed.

Valt: But he betrayed me.
