The ever lush green surrounding that was filled with different species of flowers in bloom was now bare and sad as the trees shed its last beauty in preparation for winter. The noisy crowd that showed familiar faces was now gone, leaving the whole compound deserted and gloomy from the wet weather.
Walking around the compound, she walked back towards their hut, where they always spent chatting with each other the latest news or gossips in the school. The days they had fun together were all right here, in this small hut. The mushroom table they always sat at every time was now gone, leaving the whole hut feeling incomplete from its perfect companion.
She made her way towards the back entrance and entered without any difficulties, knowing that it was always unlocked. Up the flight of stairs she went, once in a while letting out heavy puffs. Finally reaching the rooftop, she unlocked the brown wooden door using a spare key given to her by the teachers here 3 years ago.
The door opened with a soft click as she swung the door open and a ray of sunshine greeted her. Nothing really changed up here, except that the trees were going in hibernation. All around her, there were different shades of colours on the ground, the result of the trees shedding their multi-colour leaves.
The fountain in the middle of the whole rooftop was no more alive with water and the shed at the other end of the rooftop was where it was, locked and secure from robbers. Her two legs brought her to the bench under a willow tree that used to be in its beautiful glory was now down to its skeletal frame, its prized procession lying on the ground.
Sitting on the bench, all the memories came rushing to her like a tsunami. Those times when they were discussing about their crushes, the day when her best friend finally confessed about her love for "him", those days when she cried in pain while her best friend were outside laughing with "him". Those bittersweet memories, those days they had together.
All of them flooded through her as she relived every moment she made here in this school that was haunted with memories. A tear allowed itself to fall from her blurry eyes as it tainted her rosy cheeks. Looking at her watch, she had about a few more minutes before she had to rush to the airport for her flight to the UK.
But first, she had to do something before leaving this place forever. Something she had promised her other half that she would do if she ever left here for good, and she wasn't going to break this promise even though the betrayal still lay fresh in her heart.
Taking out a penknife, she carved something on the willow. It was just big enough to be seen if you looked carefully and closely at the tree. A flicker of hope lay within her that her best friend would remember the promise they made and come here after receiving the news.
Leaving as the way she came, she was finally able to let go of her past, the one thing that shadowed over her, now gone.
