I rode out of Kansas City, going, south to Vale
A young boy sat on a boat as he played a guitar a crowd had gathered and many had begun to throw lien into his hat which laid on the deck
I was, running dodging danger, left the, girl that I loved so
Taped to the guitar was a picture of a girl with blond hair and green eyes with a heart drawn on it
Far behind lay Kansas City and the, past that I had earned
Twenty, notches on my six gun marked the, lessons I had learnedOn his hip under his long coat sat a pistol with tally marks carved into the bottom of the handle, he himself had a black eye with a scar over the corner of his lip
Many times I sold my fast gun for a, place to lay my head
The boy was a known hired gun to those who were more knowledgeable about his home town
Till the, nights began to haunt me by the, men that I lay dead
Couldn't, stand it any longer with the, life that I'd begun
The boy had begun to cry as a single teardrop landed on his guitar
So I, said good-bye to Jeannie and, became a running gun
I rode into Amarillo as the sun sank in the westernAs the sun began to set the boat left the port and the crowd grew
My thoughts in Kansas City and the girl that I love best
As I smiled and kissed her gently and then turned around to goSome of the women of the crowd had tears form in their eyes at the sadness of the song
Said I'd send for her to meet me when I reached old Vale
The boy's song had ended as he picked his hat the crowd had begun to disperse
I had barely left the saddle and my foot just touched the ground
When a cold voice from the shadows told me not to turn aroundA man had pushed his way to the front of the crowd
Said he new about my fast gun, new the price paid by the law
Challenged by a bounty hunter, so I turned around to drawThe man drew a pistol and shouted about the bounty on the boy's head
I knew someday I'd meet him for his hand like lightning flashed
My own gun stayed in leather as his bullet tore it's pathThe man had shot at the boy but missed as the bullet slammed into the boy's guitar
As my strength was slowly fading, I could see him walk away
And I knew that where I lie today, he to must lie some dayThe boy dropped his bag and drew his own gun the bullet slamming into the mans chest
Now my strength is slowly fading and my eyes are growing dim
And my thoughts return to Jeannie
and the home that we had planned
Oh please tell her won't you mister
that she's still the only one
But a woman's love is waisted when she loves a running gunThe boy put his pistol away when a man in green and a woman in white with a purple cape had approached him
