An Unforseen Fatality

All the firefighters, excluding Maya, are eating
breakfast in the beanery. Dean is cooking his delicious bacon recipe that all the others love.

Maya and Carina walk through the front door of the Station. "Seeing Jack is gonna be fun today" Carina says sarcastically. "I thought you said you were comfortable with it" says Maya.

"No, no, I am. I just- I just hate looking at him"

"You can always look at me" Maya says with a cute smile on. "Okay well come on" she says laughing "Deans making bacon today and I don't want to miss out."

Maya and Carina head upstairs and into the beanery.   "Oh hey, Carina!" says Vic. They walk towards the counter to grab some plates. On the way, Travis taps Maya's shoulder to grab her attention, "You picked a good one".

Maya and Carina sit down next to each other. Carina sends a glare with a mini hair flip at Jack. Maya's phone starts ringing. She looks down and sees it is from an unknown number. Maya starts to stand up and whispers to Carina "I'm going to take this real quick- I'll be right back." Maya walks out the beanery doors.

Maya answers the phone and a strangers voice says "Hello, is this Maya Bishop?"

"You're an OB, right?" says Dean. "Uh, yes- I am" says Carina "and yesterday I actually had a mother who was crowning when she came in so I had to deliver the baby by the uh, the reception desk". "She must've hated you" Andy says laughing.

"She came in begging for an epidural, so"

"Yeah that'll do it"

Carina picks up a piece of bacon and pops it in her mouth. "Wow- this is actually really good" she says impressed. "You're just lucky that Jack wasn't cooking it" says Dean. Carina looks around the room confused as everyone except for Jack starts to laugh. Jack defensively responds "It was one time- and the burner was just a few notches too high."

"Dude- you almost burned down our house."

"Then it's a good thing we're firefighters"

"Well, Jack's very good at messing up perfectly good things" Carina says making strong eye contact with him. The room falls quiet and Jack tries his best to get out of Carinas viewpoint.

Maya still stands outside the beanery doors. She just hung up to a phone call that changed everything. Her hands are shaking, breathing is heavy, and her eyes are wandering everywhere. The only thing she can think to do is see Carinas face.

She slowly opens the door and walks through it. She attempts to set her eyes on Carina but can't get her eyes to focus anywhere. She looks down at the ground. The hand shaking starts to intensify and her knees start to feel weaker. She looks and feels numb.

Carina watches as Maya enters the room. She could just tell something was off. Her mesmerizing, beautiful, blue eyes weren't glowing as they normally do. Carina asks very, very, concerned "Maya...are you okay?"

Maya raises her head up. "If you think about it, that's a commonly asked question..but no one actually means it- Are. You. Okay. ......It's like asking someone how are you, no one actually wants to know how you are but it's the nice thing to do.....and then the person answering isn't going to give you a real answer either- they are just going to say they're fine. They could get hit by a car and still- I'm fine" everyone around the table is exchanging worried looks to one another "but they're not fine."

Carina struggles to decide what to do. She has never seen her girlfriend like this before. What phone call could Maya have possibly gotten? She finally stands up and walks to Maya. She puts her hands on her shoulders, stares directly into her eyes, and strongly yet quietly says "Maya, I'm not asking just to ask. Tell me, are you okay?"

There is a moment of complete silence. Then Maya lets out a little smile, but she doesn't seem happy. You can tell that her head is full. Maya starts "I'm fine- I'm alive, I'm breathing but......" her mood changes back to her numb state "I- got a call." Carina's head slightly nods. Her face doesn't show anything but she's really thinking about how she's finally gonna get to know what the hell happened to her girlfriend.

"I got a call, and someone told me that my brother..." Maya starts laughing having some sort of paradoxical reaction to whatever she is about to say "he's not fine. He not fine because he's dead" her laughing intensifies even more. Looks shoot across everyone in the room. Everyone is unsure what to do. "apparently he got hit by a car and on the way to the hospital- on the way- on the" The laughing completely stops now and Maya's breathing becomes even faster.

"How about you sit down, Maya" says Robert. "Yeah that sounds like a good idea. Come on Maya, let's sit down" says Carina. Carina grabs Maya's arm and guides her to a seat. Carina moves her chair right next to her. She wraps her arms around Maya and leans her head on her shoulder.

Again, there is a large pause of silence. Except this time, Maya's eyes are staring straight ahead of her. A single tear slides down her cheek. "I said it" Maya says trying to hold back her tears. "said what" Ben asks.

"The last time I saw Mason, I told him that he was going to get himself killed" Maya cannot contain her tears anymore "I didn't mean it". She begins crying uncontrollably and starts falling forward in her seat. Carina quickly pulls Maya in her direction. Maya's heads lays resting on Carina's chest as she rocks and comforts her. "Maya" says Carina "you didn't do me anything- and I'm so sorry that you have to go through this."

Maya looks up at Carina. Her beautiful blue eyes filled with tears. She takes a big deep breath and then says "it's not fair- it's not, it's" Maya wraps her arms tightly around Carina.
