"Move, little bitch."
That's all Nash hears before he is shoved into the lockers. It never fails, it's like clockwork, whenever one of them passes by Nash, they shove him into the lockers. His shoulders are perpetually sore from the abuse, he just rubs it gently as he straightens himself out and continues on to his class.
"Why do you let them do that?" A soft voice questions him. He stops and turns around, not recognizing the voice of the person who spoke to him. He tilts his head, this must be a new student because Nash has never seen him before not in all the four years he's spent in high school. He's different, Nash can see the tattoos on his chest peeking under his white t-shirt and he also has tattoos littered on both his arms. The boy leans against the locker, his stance completely relaxed like he has no where to be. He has soft brown hair and expressive brown eyes, Nash has learned to read people's body language very well and although this boy may look scary because of his tattoos, Nash is not afraid of him.
Nash shrugs at him and shifts uncomfortably, he's not used to having people talk to him, all of the students at the small school know that he never responds when spoken to, so they don't even bother anymore. He spends all of his days quiet, he never talks in class and the teachers have learned not to call on him because when they do, he never speaks, he just stares at them with wide eyes.
His mother always sends a reminder to the school office accompanied by a letter from his Psychologist at the beginning of every school year, Nash was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome at a young age, but for some reason teacher's always think that Nash will talk if forced to. All it does is cause the other kids to laugh at him until he hangs his head and blinks back tears. Nash is a sensitive soul and when he was younger he would have complete meltdowns when he was feeling overwhelmed but as he grew older he learned to control it.
His mother took him to his pediatrician when she noticed that he wasn't speaking at all as a baby and he would fixate on certain things. The pediatrician referred them to a Psychologist and there he was diagnosed with Asperger's. It was difficult for his mother to come to terms that he would always be different but once she did she threw herself completely into making sure that Nash had the best life he could possible have.
She promised herself that he would always know that he is loved and cherished by his family, no matter what. And she kept her promise, with the advent of the iPad Nash's life changed for the better. The iPad became Nash's way to communicate with his family, it became his favorite toy, he never goes anywhere without it. He uses it to order his own food when they go out to eat and to communicate easily with his Psychologist. But he never uses it in school, he just remains silent, it sits in his bookbag and he only takes it out in the library which is where he spends his lunch periods. He loves books, he's obsessed with books and enjoys being surrounded by them. The iPad gives him the ability to carry hundreds of books at at time, all ready for him to read at the tap of a button.
The boy pushes off the lockers and walks closer to Nash who stares at him with his wide blue eyes.
"I'm Cameron, what's your name?" Cameron asks softly. He's intrigued by this boy, it's not just his blue eyes and pretty face, it's also how he carries himself. How he just brushes off being shoved into the locker, he doesn't defend himself.
Nash hesitates, he usually always just ignores when people outside his family or his psychologist attempt to make conversation with him but he feels compelled to answer Cameron's question. He doesn't want to pull out his iPad, not yet, so he just shows his notebook to Cameron where his name is written.
"Nash Grier," Cameron says out loud. He's perceptive, he doesn't ask why Nash doesn't speak because he knows it's not something that Nash will answer, at least not yet. He's been watching him all week, he saw him his first day here and he's been waiting for the right moment to approach him. No one seems to know what's wrong with Nash, they just know that he never communicates with them and he always spends his lunch in the library. They wonder if Nash has some kind of intellectual disorder but Cameron knew that wasn't true the moment he saw Nash. Nash is extremely smart, Cameron knows that he can tell in the way Nash barely skims the readings in class and finishes his in class assignments quickly. Nash was the first to hand in their Chemistry exam while all the other students struggled through the test and almost all of them took the entire class period to finish.
