Chapter 3

Dylan's POV

I carried my beautiful sleeping mate in my arms. She was light, way too light. You could see her ribs and her hip bones stuck out.

A normal wolf would have passed out. I don't even know how she managed to kill that alpha with a silver knife in her side.

I was full of pride until she ran. My wolf howled at me to catch her, I didn't need to be told twice. She has been asleep for about eight hours now.

She had already established that she didn't like to be touched or babied. After another hour we had gotten to the pack house.

Weaving swiftly around my many pack members I went to the pack hospital.

"George! I need you!" I hollered into the building.

"Alpha! How was the trip! I've already treated most warriors for injuries and- oh, who is this?"

"My mate George, she was at the scene. She killed the alpha."

"Wow." George said impressed. "She looks frail."

"Trust me she's anything but that."

Twenty minutes later the doctor, George, had given her a shot to make her shift while I refused to look at her tempting body.

Once a nurse had dressed her in a gown, George began checking her vitals.

I sat down and held her hand, staring at her face. I was in love, I didn't know how, but I was.

George cleared his throat.
"Alpha, we might want to step outside."

Standing quickly I threw open the door. "What is it George?"

Nervously George took a couple steps away from me and explained, "The luna has had multiple years of abuse. Silver scars and more bone fractions than I can count."

I was fuming. I wanted to kill whoever did this to her.

"Alpha that's not all," George took another step back. "She's been starved. Maybe a piece of food a couple times a week, but nothing more than scraps."

"I need to beat something up." I punched a hole in the wall. "You're dismissed George."

He didn't reply, instead bowed his head and ran.

I needed to see my mate. Just as I had thought that, the door to her room was broken down. I hurried toward it thinking that my mate might be in danger.

She wasn't, her black wolf appeared in the doorway. We both froze. I growled at her, she wasn't allowed to leave me.

She snapped her teeth at me and ran through the hallways. I chased after her on two legs, knowing that I wouldn't fit if I shifted. Hell, she barely fit.

She had navigated herself to front door. She broke it down and continued running. As soon as my first foot was outside the door, I shifted.

I didn't need to alert border patrol because I would be able to grab her by then. She never looked back at me, she never looked at her feet. Her determined gaze was set in front of us, away from me.

My wolf whined at that thought. I pushed my legs harder. Damn, she was fast.

We had been running for over an hour now. I was right on her tail. We were almost at the border now, I alerted patrol.

My wolf was mad that we couldn't even catch our own mate. Suddenly she stopped, I was lightly panting. She was having an extremely hard time breathing.

I licked the side of her face, she didn't snap at me. She didn't even react. My wolf whined.

Then I smelled it. How didn't I smell it before? I was too focused on my mate I guess. I stood up and placed my body in front of my mate. Blocking her from the small rouge's view.

Her eyes snapped to my mate and back to me. She got into a fighting stance. I followed her action. A whine came from underneath me.

I looked down to see her eyes fixed on the rouge. Suddenly she popped out from behind me.

She yipped at the rouge happily and started walking closer. The rouge's ears perked up and she took a step forward.

I growled and grabbed my mate by the scruff on her neck and yanked her back. It didn't hurt her thankfully. She turned her head and tried to bite me. She kicked her legs out. She caught my side, she didn't hurt me but had drawn blood.

I dropped her. She yipped again and pranced up to the rouge. The rouge's gaze stayed fixed on me. She nudged her behind her, making me almost growl until my mate took a step back.

She whined in the back of her throat and took a step towards me. I was filled with happiness. She wanted me! I was still tense though because of the rouge.

I backed away slowly so she would know I wasn't fleeing or submitting. When I reached the other side of the tree I grabbed two shirts and shorts.

My pack sets clothes behind most of the trees so we can shift and not have to worry about being naked.

I pushed a shirt towards the rouge and gave my mate a shirt. She took it happily and went behind a tree.

I shifted where I was and pulled up the shorts just as my mate walked over.

The rouge had already shifted too. She was much shorter than me with brown hair. My mate gasped and she held her gaze.

"Kaylie?" She whispered.

The rouge nodded and opened her arms. She ran into them and hugged her tightly. The rouge began to sob.

She pulled back. "Kaylie don't cry, it's ok I promise."

As if remembering I was here, she pushed my mate away from me. I growled.

"Haylee you're going to have to run when I say, ok?"

I growled furiously. She wasn't leaving me.

Laughter came from behind the rouge, kaylie, or whatever. I loved the sound of the laughter and found myself slightly smiling.

"What's so funny?" The rouge asked confused.

"Kaylie Kaylie," She started earning a growl from her. "That's my mate."

The rouges eyes widened and she stared at me.

"No way, you got an alpha!?" She asked excitedly. Now it was my turn to be confused.

"Oh god wait till I tell Xavier, he's gonna flip!" Kaylie said.

My mate gasped. "Xavier's ok?! What about everyone else. Is anyone else alive?!" She asked. What was she talking about?

I stepped closer to her. She didn't seem to notice. Kaylies face fell.

"No, it was just us. Well and you but I'm sure that's it."

"Oh." My mate replied.

"I should go get Xavier!" She spoke, changing the subject.

Her attention turned to me. Bowing her head slightly he asked, "Alpha, may I have permission to exit your land and return with my mate?"

I looked towards my mate. She was staring at me with pleading eyes.

Sighing loudly I ran a hand through my hair. "Fine. Border patrol will walk you to the border and back. They are waiting just over there." I pointed towards a couple of wolves just out of hearing range.

Turning around Kaylie shifted and ran towards the wolves.

"Thanks." My mate said sitting down.

"Why do you keep running from me?" I questioned, sitting beside her.

"I don't know, maybe I'm just scared."

I wanted to growl and tell her that I would never hurt her. I knew enough about her to know that she wouldn't believe me and would have to figure it out her own.

I smirked as I remembered the rouge calling her Haylee. "Haylee, huh."
