I don't know how we ended up here. Ahri and I ended up in a twisted world, away from our teams. Ahri's unusually pale. She waves her hand and two projectiles burn up.
"Still using your signature fire, I see." A voice echoes around us. A female voice.
"Show yourself, Xayah!" Ahri calls to seemingly no one.
A single figure jumps down, one dressed in purple. Her piercing, purple eyes shoot daggers through Ahri and me.
"Please, Xayah, you don't have to do this. Come back to the light," Ahri pleads.
Come back to the light? What does she mean?
Xayah snarls. "You shouldn't have left me to die, Ahri! You and Sarah left us," she takes a step forward. "You left us to die! Zoe found us, gave us life and a new purpose."
"Us? Ahri, who is this? What is she talking about?" I ask as Xayah plucks a feather from her cloak.
Instead of a response, Ahri forms a ball of foxfire in her palm. Both release their projectiles at the same time, the fire engulfing the feather. Ahri's ear twitches.
"Lux, watch out!" Ahri calls out to me before she pushes me aside. She dashes out just before someone appears where I was standing. He flourishes his cape as he lands.
"Ahri, whats going on?"
Ahri doesn't respond. I ready my wand before a portal appears beneath Ahri and I and we fall through.
I wake with my head in Janna's lap.
"What happened?" I ask, sitting up.
"You and Ahri suddenly passed out. Ahri was muttering a name as she slept. 'Xayah'."
Xayah? That's the same name from the twisted world. Ahri whispers something to Sarah.
"Lux, I'm sorry we had to get you involved in our affairs," Sarah takes my arm, pulling me away from my team. Soraka stays with Ahri, who seems mentally tormented by the event.
"Sarah, what's going on?"
"You know Ahri had a team before Ezreal, Soraka and Syndra," I nod, "that team consisted of me, Xayah, Rakan and Neeko."
There's that name again, Xayah.
"There's an ancient Star Guardian called Zoe. She refused to help others and sought chaos. Because of this, she harnessed the power of dark matter to kill Star Guardians. Long ago, she set a trap for Ahri's team and we walked into it. It was as she planned. She killed Xayah and Rakan and, until recently, we thought she had killed Neeko. Ahri and I barely escaped with our lives." Sarah clenches her fist. "Zoe revived Xayah and Rakan and corrupted them, taught them to use dark matter the way she does. Ahri recently discovered Neeko was alive. She saved her while we were at the slumber party."
Sarah looks away from me. She looks so fragile right now. I put my hand on her shoulder.
"We will help you save Xayah and Rakan."
Sarah looks at me, terrified. "No, Ahri and I can't lose anyone else!" She takes ten steps away from me before taking her gun out of the holster and pointing it at me. The look of fear has gone from her face but remains in her eyes. Her finger trembles on the trigger, like she's afraid she'll accidentally shoot me. "Try to help and your light will be extinguished."
She lowers her weapon and walks back to Ahri.I spend that night trying to talk to the First Star. I need to know more about Xayah, Rakan and Zoe. I need to know more about the twisted world.
A knock at my door disturbs me. I stand as Soraka enters.
"Sorry to interrupt you like this but I think I should tell you about Zoe."
"Oh, yes, do you want some tea? I feel like this is a moment for-" Soraka shakes her head and sits on the couch. I sit on the armchair.
"Zoe was one of the first Star Guardians. She and her team helped people who had lost their light and love instead of protecting the universe. Zoe's ability to create portals helped them go where they needed to. But Zoe's heart longed for chaos so, instead of taking her team where they needed to go, she took them to a twisted dimension and killed them. She brought monsters from other planets here. The First Star tried to talk to her but she wasn't listening and all the light left her. She mastered the power of dark matter and vowed to kill the First Stars light." Soraka pets Shisa lightly.
"How do you know all this?"
Soraka chews on a fingernail as she thinks.
"I'm not sure, it just came to me when Ahri told me about Zoe. Ahri said we're probably the next targets since she and Sarah escaped Zoe last time."
"Although not without casualties," I mutter to myself, not sure if Soraka knows about Xayah and Rakan.
Soraka nods before standing. She bows respectfully before leaving, Shisa on her shoulder.
I just sit and ponder what she said when I get dragged down.
I'm back in the twisted world, Ahri by my side. Both of us are in our Star Guardian uniforms.
"Is Xayah back?"
Ahri shakes her head. "Why have you called us here, Rakan."
The male I saw last time steps out of the shadows. So, he's Rakan.
"Please, don't give up on her yet, Ahri. I have a plan, one to free Xayah from her corruption, but she needs you with her," he looks at me, "both of you. She needs a leader to return to."
"I want to free both of you," Ahri replies, taking a step towards Rakan.
He simply shakes his head. "For my plan to work, I need to fall completely. I have to save her, Ahri. Please, take care of her."
"She'll be heartbroken, Rakan."
He laughs as he wipes a tear from his eye. "That's why she needs you and Sarah. Make sure Neeko doesn't fear her. She'll have a part to play in this."
The portals open up beneath us again and I fall through.
Kneeling on my floor, I call Ahri. She picks up quickly.
"Ahri, please say you were there?"
"Yes, that was Zoe's power she-"
"Yes, I know, Zoe can create portals now tell me what's going on."
Ahri sighs and explains everything.
In the morning, Ahri calls me to school. Standing next to her is someone I don't recognise. She has a lizard tail and weird patterns on her skin. She has a coat on her shoulders to protect her from the winter chill.
"Lux, this is Neeko."
Neeko puts her hand out towards me and suddenly an image of myself replaces her.
I step back, slightly startled, and slip on a patch of ice, falling on my butt. The image of me fades back into Neeko as I stand up.
"Neeko is sorry. I didn't mean to surprise you."
"Transforming is Neekos ability. She's also skilled in ancient magics."
A string of magic forms between Neekos fingers. She takes one end in her other hand and stretches it before throwing it over my head. It bursts behind me.
"I told Neeko what Rakan said."
"Neeko wants to help Xayah and Rakan, maybe they will be friends with us again."
Ahri laughs softly before patting Neeko.
"Yeah, maybe."
"You didn't-"
Ahri's death stare shuts me up. I guess she didn't tell Neeko everything.
Neeko bows slightly before she changes her appearance and leaves. I guess she doesn't feel safe walking in her form.
"Sarah wanted to see her and Neeko wanted to meet the team. They're all at Pantheons Bakery right now, Soraka's choice."
"You didn't tell her Rakan can't be saved."
"I didn't tell her that because I don't believe it. He's trying to sacrifice himself for her again, that's what got them both killed in the first place. Xayah won't forgive us if we save her but not him and will probably follow him back into the corruption. Corruption erases all emotion from people. Rakan won't feel any love for her and will not hesitate to kill her."
"So, we have to stop him from trying to save her?" I ask.
Ahri shakes her head. "We have to find a way to stop him from falling completely."
I think back to last night. "Why don't we ask Soraka? She knows more than she lets on."
Ahri and I sit in Pantheons with Soraka and Lulu. Ahri insisted Lulu join us. Shes drawing something. Ezreal and Sarah offered to show Neeko around and Syndra went home.
"Soraka, Lulu, you two have a strong connection to the First Star, have you heard anything about future danger?"
Soraka shakes her head but Lulu hands me her drawing. She hums as she draws something else. The paper is covered in purple bubbles with Z's around them.
"Well, I did hear something. The only way to remove corruption is to sacrifice your light." Soraka says. She seems fixated on Lulu's new drawing.
Maybe Soraka needs a point of interest before she learns new information. I lean over the table to look at Lulu's drawing. Its two purple silhouettes, one of the silhouettes is part pink and the other has a green cloud above him.
"Do you mind if I take that, Lulu?" Ahri asks, pocketing Lulu's first drawing.
Lulu tears the drawing out the book and hands it to Ahri who looks at the drawing.
"Thank you, Lulu," Ahri says before putting the money for our food on the table and leaving.
Sacrifice your light? That must be Rakans plan.
"How does one sacrifice their light?" I wonder aloud.
Soraka shrugs, but she seems distracted, Lulu as well.
"Soraka, Lulu," I wave my hand in front of them but neither of them responds.
I look around to make sure no ones in the bakery. It's pretty quiet and Pantheon's cooking in the kitchen. I take out my wand but something stops me. Lulu and Soraka have a purple mark on their cheeks. I hold my wand out and a bright light emerges from it. It breaks Lulu and Soraka out of their stupor and the purple mark disappears.
