Genesis's POV:
We stepped out of the car and collected our bags before the driver sped off across the darkened road.
It had started to rain during the drive and small puddles began forming on the ground.
I felt Payton grab my hand and pull me as he ran up the driveway, our feet splashing against the water. He yanked me to the side of the house away from the windows.
The wood of the home was cold and wet against my back.
"We're gonna take the back door and run to the stairs okay?" A playful smile stretched across his mouth as his hair dampened from the rain.
"Okay," I smiled and nodded excitedly.
I took a breath of the showery hair. Rain always had a significant calming, yet exciting scent.
We snaked around to the back of the house and payton delicately opened the door and peered his head in. He nodded to confirm that it was safe before grabbing my hand. We darted across the kitchen to the stairs around the corner.
We hurried up the stairs and practically flew into his room. He released my hand and set down the bags he was holding before flopping onto his bed.
I wouldn't say it was the smartest idea since the water would transfer from his soaked clothing onto the sheets, but I decided to keep my questioning thoughts to myself. It was his bed after all.
I lightly placed down my bags and squeezed some of the water out of my hair before opening the closet doors.
"You're already hanging those up?" Payton lifted his head.
"Well, yeah what if your mom walks in and asks where we got a bunch of bags," I reasoned.
"Fair point," He shrugged and pulled out his phone.
"Shit.." He mumbled and sat up.
"What's wrong?" I asked as I pulled a dress onto one of the hangers.
"Lizzie is calling," He sighed.
"Are you gonna answer?" I asked, pulling a pair of jeans out of one of the bags.
"At this point I have to," He mumbled.
"Hello," I heard him say frustratedly as he picked up the phone.
I couldn't hear her on the other side, but with the long pause that Payton took to listen, I assumed she was ranting.
"Look if you're gonna keep yelling at me this isn't gonna work," He finally spoke.
"No, no, no you're not talking. You are yelling."
"Liz stop fucking screaming at me!" He snapped, "I'm not your punching bag! If you wanna talk this out with me, I will talk to you, but if you yell at me one more time we are done."
He took a short pause before taking a deep breath.
"Bye Elizabeth," He said calmly, "I told you if you yelled again it's over."
"I don't know how to say it any blunter. I'm breaking up with you."
He frustratedly hung up the phone and his face fell into his palms. His elbows dug into his knees as he rubbed his temples.
I didn't know how to react to the situation, so I silently returned to putting away my clothes, gently tucking the sleeves of misselanious items onto the hangers. Minding my own business seemed to be the best option.
As I was trying to keep to myself, I heard a light sniff behind me. I turned in confusion when I realized the noise came from Payton.
"Are you okay?" I asked shyly. He lifted his head and nodded. His eyes were puffy and tinted red.
"You don't look okay," I said simply before sitting down next to him.
"I'll be fine," He said quickly wiping his eyes before sitting up straight, "Do you need help putting away those clothes?"
I could tell he was putting on a cheerful act as he stood up.
"You don't have to run away from your feelings," I frowned, "I probably won't be any help, but I'll listen."
He stopped moving for a moment before sitting back down.
"I just don't know what happened with her," He caved, "She was so perfect at the beginning...and she just changed all of the sudden, and I guess.."
"I guess it just really set in that I really lost the girl that she used to be," He bit the inner part of his cheek.
"Even though I think I lost that part of her a long time ago," He added while tears started dripping down his cheeks.
I didn't know how to respond. The only thing I could think to do was hesitantly, lightly wrap my arms around him.
He sat still for a couple of moments before turning and hugging me tighter. The sudden movement surprised me, but I tried my best to be comforting.
"I think I was secretly hoping that part of her would come back eventually," He mumbled into my shoulder.
"Sorry," He pulled off after a while and rubbed his eyes, "I shouldn't be putting any of this on you," He chuckled lightly.
"I don't mind," I attempted to give a reassuring smile, but I'm pretty sure I just looked odd.
