scream

"Ahh!" My heart stopped beating as I heard the glass shattering. As I got out of my bed, my legs were trembling, making it hard for me to walk. I made it to my window. Nothing. A clear, black night sky with a full moon and countless stars. It was obvious that something was wrong, but I felt like the scream was fake. Like, it wasn't connected to the world. As I pressed my forehead against the glass, I felt a cool night breeze. It was calming. Too calming.

I walked down the creaky stairs of our very old house, and tried my best to be quiet so I wouldn't wake up my sick brother. He had amnesia. When I got to the kitchen, I sat at the kitchen table. I put on some hot water and waited. It started bubbling and I poured it in a mug. I drank it. It felt warm down my throat. I went back upstairs when I stopped hyperventilating. I crawled into my bed and closed my eyes. I finally was calmed down enough to sleep.

In the morning I had cereal for breakfast. "Mom, did you hear that scream in the middle of the night?", I asked my mother. She is technically my mother, but I feel like I don't know her at all. "What scream? Remember, I was bowling last night with my friends", she responded, suspiciously. We had a weird family. My brother had serious problems, my mom was super suspicious, and I only see my dad once a year. He just drops by on christmas and our birthdays to give us presents, and then he leaves five minutes later. My mom says he works overseas, but she won't tell me the specific jobs he has. I assume he works as a ferry driver, but I'm honestly not sure. I ask my brother, but I don't know why. He is 8 but he has amnesia, so he doesn't remember much. He even forgets his name sometimes. "Andrew, did you hear that scream last night", I asked my little brother. "What scream, and who is Andrew?", he asked. I believe that he didn't hear the scream because he sleeps very well every night. I finished my breakfast, got my backpack and coat, and rushed out the door.

I couldn't stand being in that house any longer. All my life, I've learned to run from my fears. I ran as fast as my feet would take be. I was scared. I didn't know what I was so scared of. I got more scared if I knew something was wrong than if I saw something scary. I got to school. I met up with my best friend, Tracy. She hadn't the scream either. I was fed up with this. I needed answers. I had felt so alone in this world. I had no one that I could trust, or rely on.
