Ch 1.
I saw the elderly lady look back and forth between the two identical cream colored candles she was holding. She had been doing the same thing for fifteen minutes and it was starting to get late.
“Ma’am is there something I can help you with?” I said looking at her from behind the counter and giving her a half hearted smile.
“No, no, I’m fine,” she said waving a hand and not looking up. I sighed frustrated and looked at Luke who was putting his coat on.
“Luke,” I whined.
“Audrey,” he mimicked me and I shot him a glare.
“Come on there’s only ten minutes left before we have to close,” I begged.
“Then you’ll be fine, just wait until the lady picks out what she wants and close up,” he shrugged.
“Then why don’t you stay and close up,” I said hopingly.
“Not going to happen, I closed up last time,” He said and without looking back he walked out making the bell chime and flipping the CLOSED sign on so that no one else would come in. I plopped one hand on the counter and stared at the woman that still hadn’t moved from her initial position. I looked at the clock but I still had to wait five minutes.
I started tapping my fingers on the counter and clicking my tongue out of boredom. When I heard the door open I looked up and saw the elderly lady walking out.
“Ma’am aren’t you going to buy any candles?” I asked.
“No I didn’t find anything I liked,” and with that brief sentence, she left me standing there dumbfounded.
Really? I mean did she have to spend almost half an hour looking at something to decide she didn’t want it? I could have been home by now, in my warm comfy pajama’s watching a movie or laying in bed. What is wrong with people? I stomped over, grabbed my jacket and bag making my way to the door.
I grabbed the keys from my bag locking the door and walked down the street towards my house. It was really cold tonight, so I pulled my jacket closer trying to keep warm. I was turning the corner when I heard a whimper come from the ally across the street from me. Stopping and considering going to see where the noise came from, I shifted from foot to foot still trying to warm up.
I told myself that it was none of my business and I should keep walking so I didn’t get myself into any trouble. But my curiosity got the best of me and I silently crossed the street, careful to stay in the shadows so I wouldn’t be seen. I decided I would see who had made the noise and then walk straight home without looking back, it was probably just some homeless person wondering around.
My hands were balled up into fist and I bit my lip to keep my teeth from chattering together. I debated whether to turn around or just peek over the corner and stop being such a baby. Taking courage I slowly poked my head around the corner and swept my eyes through the scenery.
I saw a dumpster overflowing with garbage and a bunch of empty boxes everywhere. A gust of wind came my way and I immediately covered my nose from the horrible smell. It was almost pitch black and I couldn’t really see anything else. Great I had gotten myself all worked up for nothing.
I pulled back deciding there was nothing there, but I heard someone breathing heavily. I searched for the noise and tried desperately to see what was happening, my eyes focused on a movement near the dumpster. I gasped when I saw a woman in her forty’s clawing at the air like she was trying to pull something to her.
I started to come out of the shadows so I could go help her, and that’s when I saw him. I don’t know how I didn’t notice him before but I stepped back quickly, scared that he had heard me. The man was only an outline from where I was standing but I could tell he was big.
I would have screamed for help except he wasn’t even touching her, his hand hovered over her chest and his head was down. I moved a little closer and could see something that looked like smoke flowing from the woman’s chest to the man’s hand. I covered my mouth to prevent myself from making noise as my eyes went wide. What was he doing to that woman? It looked like he was stealing her soul. But what the heck was wrong with me, how could someone steal another person’s soul.
What was going on and why didn’t the women scream, she just leaned against the wall reaching out. The man started to lower his hand and back away. As soon as his hands reached his sides the women slumped down onto the wall and closed her eyes, but I could still see her chest rising and falling. I breathed out a sigh of relief that she was still alive.
The man looked both ways to see if there was anyone around but he didn’t spot me. He did something that surprised me however; taking off his jacket he placed it underneath the woman’s head.
“I’m sorry,” he looked down “I’m sorry,” he repeated in a monotone way. His voice was deep but firm and it scared me.
I was shaking hoping he wouldn’t come my way. If I moved now he would notice me, then I would end up just like that poor woman. I had no idea what it is he did but I definitely did not want to find out. The expression on that woman’s face was full of desperation and fear.
When he finally started walking in the other direction I felt myself relax. I gave a little thanks to God and let out a deep breath, one that I hadn’t noticed I was holding. My legs felt like jelly and even though he was far away, I backed out quietly holding on to the brick wall. I crossed the street again not taking my eyes off the ally. I felt bad for leaving the woman but I had to get out of here.
As soon as I was around the corner I went into overdrive and I started running. I knew the man had to be far gone by now but I was terrified, my feet pounded the ground and I could hardly breathe. I ran the whole five blocks home, and fumbled for the house key when the door snapped open.
“Where have you been young lady?” My mother asked. I could tell she was holding in her anger but I didn’t know what to say.
“You’re an hour late! Do you know what went through my mind in that hour?” she snapped making me jump a little. Should I tell her? Could I tell her?
“I’m sorry mom there was a customer that wouldn’t leave”, I lied trying to keep my voice normal, deciding she wouldn’t believe me, even if I told her the truth. Well come to think of it that wasn’t a complete lie.
“And you couldn’t call,” my mother said snapping me out of my thoughts.
“Mom, I’m sorry,” I said trying hard to forget the real reason I was late.
“Just go,” she sighed obviously still angry. I put my head down, ashamed I had made her so upset and walked to my room. I looked at my alarm and saw it was eleven o’clock. I changed into my pajamas and climbed into bed.
No matter what I did I couldn’t get the image of the man standing above the scared woman out of my head. I should have done something, but what could I have done except get myself in trouble. I felt terrible and ashamed; I can’t believe I left her there.
A tear slid down my cheek and slowly more followed. I looked out my window all night expecting to see a figure of a man coming to get me.
