The sound of the keys clicking under my fingers is muffled. What was I going to type again? Something about the latest trends in...
"You're about to fall out of your chair, love. I think you should call it a night."
I slowly blink up at him, struggling to make out his figure beside me at the table. A garbled sentence of protest leaves my mouth, but I'm not even sure what I said. He's probably right, the state I'm in is not one that gets work done.
But it's important... Coffee. I need coffee.
On wobbly knees, I push my chair out and stand, heading for the kitchen. One step, another, and—
The world starts tilting as I collapse, consciousness slipping out of my grasp. Falling, falling, fall—
A long arm slips around my waist at the last second, saving me from the dark Cherrywood floor. My vision slips back for a second and I catch sight of his dark gray shirt, pressed to my forehead.
"Alright, that's it." Another arm hooks under my knees and I'm lifted in the air, weightless. Soft footsteps pad across the floor and I realize he's carrying me toward the room.
"No...I have to..." I fling out an arm towards the laptop sitting atop the table, glaring at me with unfinished work.
"Sleep. You have to sleep." The deep rumbles of his late-night voice lull me to unconsciousness further, and I start to concede. I'll do it tomorrow, for sure.
The stairs creak under our weight and I slide my arms around his neck, holding tight. I would've walked up myself, but I can barely keep my eyes open, let alone control my legs. "Hm, how...chivalrous of you."
A soft chuckle, one of my favorite sounds. Before I know it, we've made it to the bedroom and the low light of the lamp clicks on, casting the room into a faint gold. The soft covers rustle and my back hits the sheets gently. Honestly, I half expected him to toss me, just for fun, but this is also nice.
Just before I feel myself fall into the sweetness of sleep, I muster up the strength to open my eyes. In the dark, it's hard to see where he is, but I lift my arm and grab his hand as he leaves my side. Slowly, he turns and crouches, meeting my eyes in question.
"Thank you," I whisper with a soft smile. Through my blurring vision, I watch as he comes closer and lands a kiss to my forehead. Despite my near-coma state, I blush just a little, feeling the warmth spread to my cheeks. As he pulls away again, I press forward and brush a kiss to his lips. The slight surprise in his eyes sets me grinning as I turn and pull the blanket over my head. However, I don't let myself succumb to the sleep until I feel him fall into bed beside me.
"Goodnight."
