Holly Sumber decided to be an outcast so she wouldn't have to deal with anyone's bullshit. But she becomes the target as people suspect she is the murderer of will Byers.
Her life had turned upside down at the age of 10 after the tragedy that took the lives of her parents; the instinct to detach herself from the world and deal with her feelings on her own instantly taking over. This has happened before due to her preference of hiding her feelings from everyone, seeing it as some kind of vulnerability. She hated feeling vulnerable. It usually only lasts for a short period of time, with Holly immediately returning to her daily routines, but this time was different. She pushed away everyone who cared about her and didn't let them back in, her once cheerful personality now hidden behind a cold front.
Nancy Wheeler always was a cheerful soul who wanted to be friends with everyone who was nice back. She already knew about Holly's bitterness, but felt a strong pull to the girl who just wanted to be left alone. Nancy did know she shouldn't force the girl to be friends, but she felt bad whenever she heard Holly talking on the school phone with sobs.
However in the time she spent on her own, Holly found herself overly fond of Nancy. She never admitted it by pushing the brunette away over and over again, but she always found a way to fall back in front of her.
Holly had put up a show to make her look and feel tough, while Nancy did the complete opposite. Getting sucked into the upside down world through a boy made them think that their shows would just keep going, but it broke down little by little instead.
Maybe they weren't as different as they thought.
