It seemed as though most children were told Slytherin is the mean house. It's an evil house. The one where only the bad kids go to. But it didn't take long for Lane to realize that wasn't the truth. In reality, there were bad apples in all of the houses and, in the case of one of her best friends, good apples in Slytherin.
Ravenclaw held itself as one of the best houses when it came to academics but in reality, the character of the house members wasn't always the best. It started her first year. Being the same age as Luna Lovegood she found herself being fast friends with the blonde when she realized they'd both been sorted into the noble house of Ravenclaw. Luna was... well, she was what most people would consider strange. She was quirky with her own way of expressing herself which Lane loved. However, despite the light 12-year-old Lane saw in Luna, most of the Hogwarts population took to bullying the eccentric blonde – which in turn made Lane an easy target to the true evil's children could produce with their words.
Lane herself wasn't exactly the most normal of people. Growing up in a muggle household with parents in denial of the special talent their child held – she was sent to Hogwarts a year late. She was already one to be picked on for looking older than the other students in her year as well as the freckles that smattered her face and the extra weight she carried around her middle. Children were cruel and she was no stranger to it.
In her first year, the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor was Gilderoy Lockhart. He wasn't the best teacher, but part of Lane found herself thankful for him. He'd insisted on the importance of inter-house relations at Hogwarts and made every student pair up with someone from another house. So, by luck or by chance, Lane found herself face to face with a red-haired girl from Gryffindor who soon became one of her closest friends: Ginny Weasley. It was astonishing really how quickly they became friends. They told each other everything... From Ginny have an older brother Lanes age to the 5 other older brothers she had as well. Lane wasn't sure what to do when Ginny mentioned a strange diary, but it all seemed to end fine with the help of Harry Potter and his friends... It was through these tales Lane found herself wishing more and more every day that she could be a Gryffindor. But she couldn't... the sorting hat was never wrong after all.
When summer came, Lane found herself dreaming she could go with the red-haired family as they left the train station. But instead, she found herself sitting in the rain watching them leave as her own family was late to pick her up. The two months away from Hogwarts could not have ended quicker for Lane no matter how hard she wished upon rogue starts in the night sky hoping someone would hear her. With her second year came the fear of mass murderer Sirius Black... or so they lead people to believe. Her second year flew by without many interesting aspects besides their new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor: Remus Lupin. She'd found herself drawn to him fairly quickly. Instantly noticing that he actually cared for his students, unlike Lockhart who only cared from himself. Lane admired him a lot... vowing he was exactly how she wished to be when she grew up. Taking notice for her quick learning, Professor Lupin offered to help her get ahead with her learning and take some lessons the 3rd years were taking. She soaked knowledge in like a sponge, so she gladly accepted.
By the time her 2nd year at Hogwarts had finished everything seemed... mundane. The wizarding school always had a problem, and it took the great Harry Potter to save the day. She'd spoken with Harry a couple of times. She didn't think he particularly liked her, but she didn't mind. She was a background character in everyone's life it seemed... even her own. Luna had stuck by her side all these years... they were each other's security blankets against the ignorance of the other girls in their dormitory. Oh, how Lane wished she could share with Luna, Ginny and their quick friend Rosie Rosemerta instead of the rude classist likes of the Ravenclaw girls they were currently stuck with.
The Hogwarts express had begun getting packed as Luna and Lane sat staring out the window at the students getting ready to board. It was going to be their 3rd year. Part of Lane dreaded the idea of going back now that Professor Lupin wouldn't be there anymore (she really didn't understand why it was such a big deal that he was a werewolf). The Triwizard tournament was to take place and an excited buzz was carried around from cart to cart with the news spreading. All seemed normal for Lane until she saw him. The compartment door opened, and Ginny stood there with her two twin brothers and their friend... Lee Jordan. Of course, she'd seen the twins before, but it always felt like she was invisible when Harry, Ron and Hermione were telling their tales. So now, when she looked up and met the brown eyes of George Weasley it was as if time itself stopped.
His hair was a flaming red and rested at his shoulders... his eyes a brown that could only be described as the colour of fresh honey the bees produced on the farm Lane grew up on. They sparkled and drew anyone in with the soft yet mischievous glow they held. She felt drunk after just one real look at him and she hadn't even taken in the lower half of his face.
"Mallard?" a voice called her last name bringing her from her staring. She looked around for the voice and it was Fred, the older of the two Weasley twins.
She cleared her throat and looked at the four people outside the compartment. She hoped her cheeks weren't as red as they felt from the blood that had rushed to them in her realization at how absolutely handsome George Weasley truly was.
"We can't find any more empty carriages, so Ginny said it was fine if we shared with you guys?" Lee questioned and all Lane could do was shyly nod and move her bag closer to herself.
Ginny took the seat to Lanes right and began talking excitedly about her summer and time at the Quidditch World Cup, but all Lane could think about was how strange her stomach felt... It was like a million paper kites had taken flight in her. She felt a way she'd never experienced before, and she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. For the rest of the ride, Lane felt herself trying to catch sneaky glances at George, but it was like every time she looked in his direction his eyes met hers making her quickly look away. The trolley lady came and soon enough the twins were buying her nearly empty of all their favourite sweets.
"Jesus Freddie leave some for the rest of the kids." Ginny chuckled as she watched him shove a chocolate frog in his mouth.
"I'm a growing boy-" he said around his mouthful of chocolate and groaned as he saw which card he'd gotten. "Another Rowena Ravenclaw!"
He handed it to George who raised his brows before looking up at Luna and Lane.
"You two are Ravenclaws right?" He asked and Lane shyly nodded in response. "You have it then-" he smiled handing the card over "-some house pride."
She gently took the card from his hand and was sure she felt a spark as their skin connected for a brief second. She looked down at the smiling face of Rowena Ravenclaw and knew at that moment she'd keep the card forever. She noticed Luna staring at her however and blushed deeply.
"Oh, Luna did you want it?" She asked hoping with all of herself that Luna would say no.
However, before Luna could even answer another groan filled the compartment.
"AGAIN?"
It was from Fred. He held up another Rowena Ravenclaw card and had a scowl on his face that in reality wasn't very menacing considering he had chocolate around his mouth.
"Well, at least you two don't have to share now." He said handing the card to Luna who smiled politely.
"Thank you, Fredrick-" she said softly making his eyes widen.
"Oi-" he began replying but Lane was already zoning them out and smiling down at her card. Perhaps George was right, she should have some Ravenclaw pride.
