Bang!

Prince Daniel stormed into his private study, slamming his door behind him. His friend, Mallory Alessi, was waiting for him, her feet resting on an oak table, the centrepiece of the room.

"Soooo, the meeting didn't go so well?" Mallory asked. Daniel punched the table in the middle of the room, his body tense with emotion.

"I can't believe him!" Daniel cried, his words accented by the aggressive way he yanked a map off one of the many shelves that lined the room, "Anyone with half a brain cell could see they're on the move!"

Mallory got up out of the cushioned seat she had been waiting in and leaned forward over the table. "That bad, huh?"

The Prince's hands clenched. "The Wraiths are planning something."

Mallory nodded. "I agree."

"At least someone does," Daniel muttered under his breath.

Mallory continued, ignoring the Prince's comment. "But it's the King you have to convince."

Daniel traced the outline of the map, the anger draining from his voice. "Valissis," he whispered, "I've heard it's a beautiful place."

A sigh came from Mallory. "Nowhere can be beautiful with creatures like the Wraiths tainting it. And coming back to that topic..."

Daniel moaned, slumping into the chair Mallory had just recently vacated, his head resting in his hands. "It went terribly," came Daniel's muffled voice, "It was even worse because your father was there."

"Oh no," Mallory murmured.

"Oh yes," answered the still muffled reply.

Mallory suddenly felt a great deal of sympathy for the Prince, who was currently slumped next to her, taking up half the oakwood table. Jaxon Alessi was able to argue any side of a case without even thinking about it. That's what made him such a good royal advisor. He'd have torn Daniel's case to pieces.

"How are you feeling?" Mallory asked, concerned.

"Shredded. Thanks for asking."

"You need sleep." Mallory said, nudging him in the shoulder.

"No, I don't." Daniel said, without looking up.

"I've seen the bags under your eyes. You need sleep," Mallory insisted, tugging on his brown hair, which he kept long to annoy his father. King Wiliam said that long hair was for peasants who couldn't afford to get it cut.

The Prince finally looked up. "I could say the same about you."

Mallory laughed. She shoved Daniel unceremoniously out of the chair he'd been sitting in and onto the floor.

"Hey!"

Daniel sat up, trying unsuccessfully to push his hair out of his face. "What was that for?!"

Mallory sighed, walking over to him with mock severity.

"Well Princeling, I can't leave until you do. If I leave, you'll stay up all night going back over information you already know. And who will bear the consequences of your sleepless nights? Me." With the last word, she had swung her hand up to point at her chest.

"Princeling?" Daniel asked, still sitting on the floor, "that's new. What an extensive vocabulary you have."

"Gooooooooo!" Mallory moaned, a smile playing at her lips.

Daniel threw his hands above his head, smiling wildly, "I'm going! I'm going!"

Mallory snorted. "You'd better be," she muttered, the smile taking over her face, "See you tomorrow."

Daniel grinned back at her. "Will do."

And with that, the Prince strode out of the room.
