Mira felt as if something was wrong the moment she woke up the day after she came back to school. She checked through her bag twice, thinking she might have forgotten something back home. But, that didn't seem to be the case.
Examining her appearance in the mirror that morning, she straightened out the knot in her tie and made sure her blouse was tucked properly into her black pants. She slipped into her shoes and whipped her hair up into a messy bun. Slinging her school bag over her shoulder, Mira sighed as she walked out of the dormitory and up towards the cafeteria for breakfast.
She spotted her friends, Vera Tyron and Felicia Grant standing near the entrance to the cafeteria, chattering about something or the other. Mira wasn't feeling up to gossiping about whatever they seemed to be so enthralled about and suppressed a groan when Vera waved a hand at her.
"Hey, you won't believe it, but my brother wants to ask you out for the Spring Fling," Vera gushed the second Mira joined them.
Mira did her best to keep her face from contorting into a Watson-esque grimace. It wasn't that she didn't find Damien, Vera's older brother, cute. But, Damien was notorious for trying to get girls to make out with him in random, empty classrooms. While some of her classmates may be into that – Mira found nothing appealing about letting a fifteen-year-old boy's tongue in her mouth. When Vera, Felicia, and some of the other girls in her dorm would get giggly and talk about things that Mira was convinced none of them were old enough to be doing at that moment, she felt nothing but appalled.
Felicia nudged Mira with her elbow. "Didn't you hear what Vera said?" she asked. "Damien Tyron wants to ask you to the dance!"
"I don't even know if I'm going," Mira replied plainly as she entered the room. She saw Isaac and Jayden enter from the second entrance and take a seat at one of the tables. Despite having different friends and Isaac being a senior, the Greene brothers always tried to sit together during meal times. Isaac had faced teasing for it last year as he was the in the school basketball team - the cool kids - while Jay was on of the rare boys who had joined the dance/theatre club. But Isaac didn't care about these matters....."Our mother has taught us better", Isaac would always reply.
"Not going? Not going?!" Felicia sputtered, bringing Mira's attention back to the conversation at hand. "Why wouldn't you go?"
She whipped around and stared at her two friends. "Because if you haven't noticed, I've got actual things going on right now that may preclude me from thinking about something as trivial and silly as a dance!"
Storming off, she ignored the snide "drama queen" remark Vera hissed under her breath as Mira walked towards Isaac and Jayden. Isaac took one look at her as she approached and laughed. "Finally tired of those two nitwits?" he asked.
"I am this morning," Mira groused.
"What has you in a mood?" Jay asked.
She sighed. "I don't know – I feel…off."
"Off?" Jay inquired.
"I thought I was missing something, but I've searched everything and can think of nothing. It's just a weird feeling, but I cannot find out the cause," Mira clarified.
Isaac laughed again. "Maybe you feel off because you're actually talking to Jay in public, instead of treating him like a bloody pariah."
Jay smacked Isaac in the arm. "Oi! Don't you have a girlfriend to kiss or something?"
"Ah, I know when I'm not wanted," Isaac replied with an eyeroll. With an exaggerated sigh, he got up from the table, walking towards his girlfriend, Alison, who had just entered the cafeteria, and kissed her on the lips - smirking at Jay afterwards.
