As the morning sun rose from the cold night, I got out of my bed with nothing on my agenda that wasn’t out of the ordinary. I get dressed and emerge out of my “dark cave” to go to the only convenience store left in town. While waltzing through the fresh cut grass that gave the smell of a new opportunity, the once Buzzing population of Old Jersey is now a ghost town. I finally reached the store, it was still pretty early in the morning so there wasn't exactly anything exciting going on. I walk in, the chime that signals my presence could be heard throughout the store. The cashier greets me and politely I greet him back. The family had given me a list of what they needed from the store, we couldn't afford much so we couldn't go for anything too fancy. I grabbed two bags of jerky, two bags of salted assorted nuts, and one large water bottle. After paying the cash register and saying goodbye I decide to take a stroll around town.
I don't remember much of what happened to this place, the most I hear nowadays are from my grandparents talking about how good it was when they were young, considering how things are now it must have been way better. As I walk through the charred streets seeing nothing but burnt vehicles and worn down buildings reclaimed by nature I come across a pamphlet, by the looks of it it actually looked quite new. It must have been blown here by the wind somehow. on the pamphlet it reads, “ Come to New Mesopotamia. Where fun never ends!”
New Mesopotamia… huh I thought to myself, sounded like an amusement park. by the looks of it, it looks like what the people call the “Big City” around here. Inside the pamphlet there were people with big smiles on their face and buildings that didn't look like they would collapse at any moment. If only there was a way to get there without breaking the bank ... It looks like a lot of fun and the family does need a vacation. I thought to myself, now if only I can get the cash to get some tickets.
After realizing how impossible of a task that would be, I try to make my way back home. By the time I finish reading the pamphlet, the Sun roughly tells me that it's about 7:02 a.m. now how I know that is that I don't, that was a complete guess hence the word roughly. anyways, I might as well introduce myself, the names Jonathan or Jon for short. I've been living in Old Jersey for my entire life. my grandpa said that there used to be thousands of people here, but now there's only a handful of us because of that robo Hitler guy. I don't know exactly what he did but all I know is that he must have a one killer backstory but I probably shouldn't say that or I will probably get my head cut off or get my butt shoved in prison.
But I think it's time that I actually start going home and stop dozing off about what was and start thinking about now. What I do now is that I like to rummage around the old Scrap heap in the center of the town. It's filled with looters and bandits that try to make it their turf. That may sound bad, but I know my way around these parts and if you lived around here as long as me you will be just fine. There's a little opening on the side of the gate that they don't look at so I can easily sneak past the guards. But this time I usually don't have to go so sneakily because the guards here are... slow. Okay here me out, I'm not saying that to be mean I literally mean they can't move fast they are as slow as a slug. So it makes it pretty much safe the entire time, an exception for the Godly amount of weapons they carry so I guess that's that.
You may be asking yourself, “What guy wants to go around a place where you can get Tinnitus faster than AIDS. Well, because metal. Specifically refined metal, is quite good money around here. We breakdown old cars and things and send it off to who knows where, all I know is that the money is dirty but it's money nonetheless. This should be easy enough, well all I got to do it's just going underneath this hole that I've made and it should be easy as pie. I crouched down and scurry my way into the junkyard looking around. It's pretty much the same of what you would see at any junkyard around here: random appliances, lots of cars and a strange surplus of weird flying machines.
I find an old beat up backpack that has the minimal amount of tools to break apart these things and carry in the backpack itself. I take the backpack and look around for things that have the least amount of rust on it. I make my way to one of those flying machines, it's strangely long with big triangular arms with circular like engines. I take the tools out of the backpack and start getting to work. This isn't particularly strange because it's what I do for work anyways, except it's a little more efficient than just working with pliers and hammers.
I decided to work on the engines because it was the lowest and closest to me, I didn't want to take too much because that would take too long and suck out most of my energy for my shift tomorrow. But for now, I'll just take those blade like thingamajigs and call it a day. Now the noise might be bad because it could alert the guards but, I'm pretty far from any guards and it's pretty noisy here already so I pretty much blend in with the crowd. Over the course of 30 minutes I have managed to get about 20 to 25 of these blade type things which should be enough for now. So it's time I say goodbye to this junkyard and find some place to sell this metal.
I throw out the old tools and shove the blades into my backpack Yes I'm stealing this, they don't need it anyways plus my bag with the groceries are full. I quickly jump over the gated fence and head back in the direction I came. I started thinking again on how I can leave this place, it's not that I don't want to. I'm living a perfectly good life here. But, it would be nice to meet some different people you know maybe a job that won't put my life on the line constantly... hold on, what if I didn't need to pay for a ticket at all… something to think about.
Anyways my shift at the dock starts tomorrow at 8:00 so time to head home and rest my eyes.
