Chapter Two
When I awoke, I awoke somewhere where I had never explored. First of all, it was freezing here, and second, I had a horde of Yetis surrounding me.
“Finally, someone woke up.” North bellowed in his russian accent.
I yawned and rubbed at my eyes. “How long was I out?”
“About a month or so.” Bunnymund said, hopping up to my side. “You alright there, love?”
I nodded, lost for words. This place was amazing-filled with wonder and hope and children’s beliefs. I sighed, and spun in place, excitement flowing into my veins. “This place...” I began, letting the words just...float there, almost tangible.
“Is Amazing?” Jack Frost finished for me, the sound of his bare feet hitting the worn wood of the floor echoing in the space.
“It was a rhetorical. Everyone knew the last two words.” I reply simply, smugly shrugging my shoulders, and I turned to North.
“So, this is your workshop, huh?” I asked, gesturing to the wonderful scene around us.
“Why, yes, this is my workshop.”
I smiled at a movable wall, that was pulled away to reveal the Man in the Moon.
Good Morning, little sister. How was your sleep?
I giggled a little, and winked at my brother, and then turned back to the group of guardians, “So, what have I missed being antisocial and all?” I asked, sliding back onto a bench behind me. “And what is all this war with Pitch? I thought he decided to back off when the Dark Ages finished.”
The group remained quiet for a little. “He came back,” Bunnymund said bitterly, and then he looked at me, anger brewing in his eyes. “And why are you so interested in Pitch?”
I turned my gaze to him, and I felt a guarded expression consume my face and body’s posture. “Are you accusing me of being an anti-guardian like Pitch? I having been protecting the children of the world three, no, four times longer than you.”
Bunnymund stood up on his hind legs, as he was a little bunny, he stood about a foot or so above the ground, and even though he wasn’t towering above me, I still felt the hostility in the air. “Don’t act like you are all high and mighty!” He growled, “No one has ever believed in you, and your almost powerless now! You can’t help anyone!”
I flinched as if he had hit me, and the silence that filled North’s workshop was deafening. I stood straight up, letting my arms dangle uselessly by my side. I felt tears well up in my eyes, and just as the first one started to roll down my cheek, and turned my back on the guardians.
“I-I-I guess” I said, trying to keep the tears and hurt out of my voice, letting my words sound robotic and cruelly uncaring, “You are right, Bunnymund.”
Even with all my might, my voice cracked with emotion. I placed my hand on my mouth and continued, letting my emotions be washed out with anger and distrust. “I am useless, arn’t I? No powers without consequences, because no one ever believe in me. But even though I was never believed in,”
I wiped away the stray tears on my cheeks, and turned around to give Bunnymund a hard glare before continuing on my rant. “I fought to protect the children when I was needed, and when I wasn’t, I was there, inspiring curiosity until ailment prevented me from doing so. So, even now, I will fight, even if I-”
I clamped my mouth shut, and ran out of the room, feeling bitter, and most of all, confused.
Why was I so sensitive about the subject of my non-belief?
