I had a dream about him last night. Him, the guy with the iridescent eyes, curved pointed nose, and lips thin, but not grotesquely so, hair so white snow would be jealous. Just perfect. But these always seem like dreams for the only thing real about them was how they felt, as if I was holding around his waste laughing at being so high in the sky. The thing that makes it seem dreamlike is the ghouls, pixies, nameless beasts, but the one thing I love about dreaming these frequent dreams are the dragons.
I looked over my shoulder as I heard a whoosh, this was the third time I had heard what sounded like wings. I hugged my books tightly across my chest and quickened my pace. It wasn’t just the fact that I couldn’t locate the source, the whoosh these wings made sounded heavier, more labored than any bird I knew.
I raced passed the threshold to my house scrambling up to my den, as I called it, I quickly announced she was home before throwing my stuff onto my bed without precaution. I sat down at my desk and stared at myself in my large and very ornate vanity mirror. I looked intensely at my pupils for fear of going crazy till my eyes began to cross. Satisfied I was not intoxicated, I relaxed and looked into the mirror.
I was about 5’9” with long wavy brown hair almost down to my waste. I was nothing special compared to some of the girls at my school, who were tall and skinny with large boobs that I had to admit I was kind of jealous of. They have curvy bodies, I do not. They have sculpted features, I do not. They have bright eyes, but mine are deep blue and black around the edges. My face is slender without a blemish, my nose is normal though not too pointy but not knobby either. My lips protrude slightly and seem to be permanently fixed in an indifferent flat line.
I am 17 year old girl that does not want to be noticed, because I can’t meet peoples’ eyes. It’s not that I don’t want friends, but even when people don’t notice, they always walk around me as though I was surrounded by a foul smell. I must say, being rejected from society sucks below the belt.
I am Maddie Shale.
I hear the sound of the alarm buzzing loudly in my ear, pulling me from my sleep.,Though I don’t sleep I am always in a state of awareness. I pull the covers off an land on the cool tile of my den. “I despise the people that made alarms,” I mumble quietly to myself. My legs are bare and cold because I slept in only boy-shorts. I look around to find my jeans and pull them up to my hips, my shirt I find laying over the back of one of my chairs. After I am ready I go downstairs to the kitchen and pour a glass of coffee. My parents never come downstairs in the mornings, but leave soon after I do, or sometimes before I wake. I don’t mind though, it gives me a chance to think about the day ahead of me, uneventful as it may be. I am careful to close and lock the front door as quietly as I can. It’s still loud enough to wake the cat, Sparkles. I named him that because the day we found the tabby siamese mix he was cover in what looked like glitter. He follows me whenever he can, so as I get into my old Ford truck he slinks into the car and settles down in the seat next to me. I pump the gas a few times to get it steadily running then set out for school. As I leave the parking lot I glimpse down the road looking for cars and one passes. A car I have never seen passes in front my driveway. He is going no faster than 20 mph. as he passes. His windows are tinted so I can barely see in but I can see the outline of a face, a face I have seen before. His face.
Chapter 1
Jace
I arrive at school just as Caroline, my arch enemy, walks through the doors at the school. As she opens the door she looks back and gives a smirk only she can. I follow, but at a slower pace so I don’t get to close to her poisonous smile when she sees her friends. I walk the other direction as soon as the hallways allow me. I automatically start walking toward where the art room is. I slow as I hear voices and creep closer to the door. As I am about to put my hand on the door to pull it open the mysterious voice guy stands on the other side of the door and I find myself approximately six inches from His chest. He is almost a head taller than me. I look up and immediately our eyes lock. They stay that way for a few seconds, but with a look of indifference he turns and keeps walking. Something pulls in my chest, as a deep recognition registers.
