Harry and Louis had been together for quite some time, but to them, it wasn’t quite long enough. There were many obstacles thrown in the way of their relationship (management being their biggest one), but they always overcame those obstacles. As Louis always told Harry: “My love for you is stronger than absolutely anything. Of course we’re always gonna get through it.”
It had been ages since the two of them got to spend any time together, just the both of them. Harry had a great idea for a getaway, one that he knew Louis would love. His mum and stepfather owned a private beach house in California, and it was the absolute destination for a romantic vacation. The house sat on its own piece of beach, making it totally private. They would truly be alone here, and that made Harry feel extremely happy indeed.
The day of their arrival, Harry blindfolded Louis and told him not to peek. He wanted this to be a surprise and he wanted to see the look on Louis’ face once he took the blindfold off. Louis kept squirming in his seat, whining things like “How much longer?” and “Where are we going, Harry?” Harry would smile and playfully tell him to shut it, that he would find out soon enough.
When they pulled up to the house, Harry got out of the car and opened Louis’ door for him. “Smell that?” he whispered in Louis’ ear, referring to the salty air of the ocean. “What does that smell like to you?”
Louis sniffed, frowning. “Um...I don’t know. Harry, where are we?”
Harry grinned, and untied the blindfold. He removed it from Louis’ eyes, and Harry’s grin only widened when he heard Louis’ surprised gasp. Louis’ eyes scanned the ocean, then the shore, then he turned around and gazed, wide-eyed, at the house.
“Harry!” Louis cried, excitement and joy clear in his voice. “You...you didn’t have to do this! I thought we were going to a hotel or something! This...this is truly amazing!”
Harry pulled Louis into his arms, pecking his lips gently. “Well, you deserve the absolute best. You also deserve better than some hotel room that so many people have used already. You deserve to be in a place where you and I can just be us for a change. No hiding, no trying to play it off as ‘just friends,’ no management on our tails about keeping what we have a secret. We deserve this, right here.”
Louis smiled, leaning into Harry’s chest, listening to his heartbeat. “I love you so much,” he whispered.
“And I love you,” Harry whispered in return, kissing Louis’ hair, holding him tightly in his arms.

It was two days later when Louis awoke to an empty bed. Confused as to where Harry was, he got up, slipped on a pair of boxers, and went looking around the house for him. He grew worried as he entered the last room to look: The kitchen. He looked all over, until his eyes fell upon the kitchen window. He looked outside, and saw his boyfriend, spread out on a massive beach towel, his Ray Bans hanging from nose as he looked up at the clear, bright sky. Louis was confused for a moment as to what Harry was doing, until it dawned on him: Harry was actually trying to tan.
Harry squirmed on the towel, his face crinkling in frustration. He turned to lay on his stomach, putting the Ray Bans in a small bag he took out with him. Louis had no idea why Harry needed to take a bag outside when the house was maybe ten feet away, but he didn’t question it. After all, this was Harry. He just looked at him, smiling a little and giggling at the younger boy’s ever-growing frustration. Harry laid his head in his arms, his legs swaying gently in the air. A light breeze came in and ruffled his curls, and Louis’ heart melted at the sight. Harry, in this moment perhaps more than others, looked like a true god.
