When we were in the labs, we - that is, James, Adam, and I - were all poked and prodded for "scientific research". They told us almost daily that we were nothing, that we were alone. That no one was like us. Our families had disowned us, they said. After the final expiriment they did on me - the one that gave me amneisia - we escaped. For three years, we had believed we were completely alone. Now, here was this girl, who completely destroyed this idea. She crushed the foundation of everything I ever believed in an instant.
"Do you like eating flies?"
"Huh?" I asked, confused.
"Well, your mouth's been open for about two minutes now, so I took a guess."
I laughed, and she joined in with me. Her laugh sounded like ringing bells.
"Listen," I said, unsure if how to phrase what I wanted to say, "I know I just met you, but, um, you should come live with me."
"UH, WHAT?" I heard James yell. I had forgotten about him. I yanked the earpeice out, turned it off, and put it in my pocket.
"So, what do you say? Wanna come?"
After a few minutes of internal deliberation, she said "Sure, why not? One question: how are we gonna get there?"
"Well, I could try to teleport you," I said, "but you might lose your lower half... I haven't really learned if I can teleport people yet."
"I can't make anything over twenty pounds, so making a car is out of the question," she said. "We could steal the guard's keys..."
"That's a great idea, actually."
"We might have to kill him."
"Not such a good idea. Here, follow me."
I crouched down, crawling over to the guard. As I approached him from behind, he began to turn around. I blinked quickly, and I was behind him again. I popped up, saying "Surprise, bitch!" and put him in a choke hold. He grasped at my forearm around his neck, gasping for breath, until he slowly started going limp. I let go after a few more seconds, and he fell to the ground at my feet. I checked if he was still breathing, which he was, and grabbed his keys from the keyring on his belt. I jingled them at Ash, and said "Wanna go for a ride?"
She guided me to his car, and I got into the driver's seat. I had practiced driving a bit in a deserted parking lot once. I almost crashed at first, but I got better. I started up the car, put it in reverse, and pulled out of the junkyard. As we drove, I was asking her questions about her life, like where she had lived before the yard, why she lived in a junkyard, but more importantly, why there was a heavily armed guard at the entrance. She told me that she had seen people arrested when she was younger, and she didn't know why. She remembered her family being led away as she hid and watched. She knew that they were being taken because of her. Since then, she had been running from place to place, svioding the scientists who wanted to expiriment on her to find out why she was different. Just like they wanted to do to Adam, James, and I. She also explained that the guard was so heavily armed because the Organization had thrown classified documents away there which were suposed to be incinerated, but someone screwed up and didn't burn them. She told me that she had been living there for longer than she had been livng anywhere else.
All of a sudden, a memory came to me.
I guess I was about seven, so it must have been ten years ago. I was at home, in the kitchen, with a kind-looking middle aged couple. I think they were my parents. For some reason, Adam and James were there. We were all eating breakfast, when there was a loud bang at the door. The man at the table - my father - got up slowly to answer the door, telling my mother to gather us all up. As she pulled us into an embrace, she whispered "No matter what happens, I will always love you. My three darlings. Always stay together, don't split up ever, okay? Remember that." She said that with a tone that implied she knew she was never going to see us again.
My father opened the door, and was roughly shoved aside by the ten SWAT members who rushed into the house. My mother stayed silent, but she rushed over to my father to help him up. He began protesting their barging in, and one of the soldiers raised his gun to shoot. My mother jumped in front of my father as the soldier began shooting, and was hit with the barrage of bullets. She fell to the ground in a pool of her blood. My father let out a blood-curdling scream, as he fell to his knees in front of her inert body, cradling it in his arms. There was a loud bang, as he fell on top of her.
The bastards had killed my parents.
That was the end of the memory. I came out of it, to hear Ash yelling and grabbing at the wheel. I looked up at the road, and saw that we were almost off of it completely. I jerked the wheel, and brought the car to a stop on the side of the road. As it came to a full halt, I began to cry harder than I ever had in my entire life. I was crying for two reasons. One, because they killed my parents. The other reason, was because I realized I wasn't alone. I had two brothers.
