The dust spread at Lila's fingertips as her hand grazed over the old antique drawer. "Do you like it?" Her father, Mr. Plum asked. Lila shrugged. "It's pretty. But old. When did Grandma get it?" After her sweet Grammy had passed away, the Plums and their siblings had gathered at her house, looking for whatever they wanted to salvage before the movers took it away.
Well, sighed Mr. Plum. "It was actually a gift from your Great Aunt I believe. I remember mom had already had it when I was about 10." He gazed at the funeral booklet he was holding. "Hurry up sweetie, we've only got about 30 minutes before we gotta run to the church. The funeral's soon." Lila nodded and kept looking. She flipped open some old Magazines but quickly set them down after realizing they were just about Grandfather clocks and gardening tools. Suddenly, the door burst open, letting a puff of chilly wind fly in. It was Mrs. Plum, bundled up in her coat and earmuff. She stomped her snow-covered high-boots on the old rug and proceeded in. "I checked in with the Pastor, Fred." She said, taking a seat in the velvet love chair, "He said that the funeral will have to be postponed to tomorrow because he's got an emergency appointment." She rubbed her forehead, letting out a breath of cold air. Mr. Plum huffed, "It seems the Pastor's always busy! Now if he's not showing up tomorrow, I will find somebody else." And right before Lila could talk, the door opened once more. It was Uncle Tony and Aunt Lucy. Uncle Tony had a bushy beard but a kind face as for his wife, short dark hair, and a stern gaze. "Sorry we're late," Uncle Tony sighed, "Raven took forever in the bathroom." He gazed at their daughter who was examining her nails.
Raven and Lila had never been close, yet they were the same age as 14. And it had always seemed like they were stuck together. Mr. and Mrs. Plum left the room with Uncle Tony and Aunt Lucy to discuss furniture problems, leaving the girls only to stare at each other. "You know I don't want to be here," Raven remarked coldly as she stared at her red nail polish. Lila shrugged, "Neither do I. We might as well do something though. Pick out whatever you want." She proceeded to look around, and Raven obeyed. Finally, something caught her eye. There was a little lamp in the corner of the room that had silver pearls lining the rim. It had an antique vibe, yet it seemed new. Raven stepped closer. "You should get it."
"You think? It's...a bit...boring." Lila kept her eyes on the piece of furniture.
"Well, would you like to keep this bracelet instead?" Raven rolled her eyes as she pulled out a small chain with colorful beads.
Lila laughed and was surprised it was because of her Gothic cousin.
