The Party Begins
A corps of caterers came down
By seven o'clock
The orchestra has arrived.
No thin five piece affair.
On buffet tables,
Garnished with glistening hors d'oeuvres.
The party has begun.
People were not invited-
They went there.
A whole pitful of oboes-
Enough colored lights to make
A Christmas tree of
Gatsby's enormous garden.
The party has begun.
The cars from New York
Parked five deep in the drive.
Spiced baked hams
Crowded against salads
of Harlequin designs,
Among swirls and eddies
Of people I didn't know.
The party has begun.
Happy vacuous bursts
Of laughter rose towards
The summer sky,
Convinced that it was theirs,
For a few words in the right key.
Trombones and Saxophones,
The party has begun.
More Interesting
They are more interesting,
Than us.
With their chopped hair
Blood red lips
And clothes,
So loose,
Perfect to dance in
They are different,
Than us.
They drink
Then stumble
Then make fools,
Of themselves
They are awful,
Unlike us.
They become fools,
We keep our wits
We remain sane,
They blubber
Tell tales
I'm glad I'm not,
One of them.
I Never Loved You
Your Hair.
Once so bright
It would shine in the sun,
Sparkle and glisten,
Now all I see are the
Cobwebs
Thin, white, frail.
Your laugh.
I once found melodious
It boomed through the air,
Echoing through my head.
Now, it give me headaches,
The sound, harsh, more
Like a cackle than the sound
I once heard.
Your eyes.
They used to twinkle.
Brighter than the stars
That filled the darkest night.
I would get lost,
Gazing into them.
Now they are hard.
I can not bear to look
Into those dark pits,
Blazing with eternal hate.
Your hands.
Softer than satin,
I loved the feel of them
In my own.
They caressed my skin,
Tingling where they pressed.
Now they prod, hurting
With every touch.
They leave marks,
Darker than the midnight sky.
I thought I loved you.
I loved your hair,
You laugh,
Your eyes,
Your hands.
But I have never loved
Your heart.
The love I had
Was false.
I never loved you.
