Nathan’s POV
“Oh for god’s sake, just hurry up” I moan, as I storm out of the door and down the path, until I reach my car where i get inside. Me and Renee are supposed to be taking Lucy shopping today. We figured it would be better if we let her tell us what she wants for Christmas like this. It’s only a month away and I’m not looking forward to it. I don’t think any of us have really thought of it, until we were asked to bring out a Christmas single last week. I don’t even know why they asked us, it’s not like we’re anything special. As I tap my fingers on the window, waiting for Renee and Lucy to get in the car, I can’t help but remember everything that happened last Christmas. It was so perfect and everyone seemed happy, but somehow, I don’t think this Christmas will be the same. The boys seem more distant than ever before, which means, no big Christmas dinner with everyone like we’ve done so many times before. I don’t even know what’s going on with them and I guess that’s kind of my fault. I’ve been so busy with family stuff, that I seem to have been avoiding spending any time with the boys, but that’s all going to change now. I will make sure that they do come to dinner with us this year and I will make sure it’s the best Christmas meal we’ve ever had.
“Finally” I say in relief, as Renee opens the back seat car door and she puts Lucy in her seat before closing the door again and then getting into the passenger seat.
“Oh shut up” Renee says, as she gives me a bitter look.
“What?” I ask, as I put the key in the ignition and slowly pull away from the house.
“You can’t exactly sit there and say finally to me, when you did nothing to help out this morning” she says, as she turns to look out of the window. She always does that when she’s annoyed.
“Yes I did. I made Lu her breakfast didn’t I?” I say, defensively.
“Yes, but then she dropped it on the floor, which meant I had to clean it up and what did you do? Oh yeah, sit on your arse and play COD” she says, as she turns back to me and gives me a stern look.
“I didn’t even go on COD this morning” I tell her with an eyebrow raised, but she just looks away. “For god’s sake. Sometimes I don’t know what to do with you. You think I’m always on COD, when in reality, I only go it when you’re out” I tell her, with my eyes glued to the road.
“Well we both know that’s not true” she says, and I don’t quite know what to say to that.
“Whatever” I know it’s a lame come back, but it’s all I have. She’s been acting this way since yesterday and it’s starting to drive me mad. She’s always trying to make out that I’m some bad person, who’s a crap dad and a rubbish husband, but I’m not.
We soon find ourselves in the town’s car park, where I quickly get out and make my way over to the paying point. I buy a ticket and then I make my way back to the car, where Renee is getting Lucy out of her car seat. I stick the ticket on the front window, before locking up the car. “Where are we going first then?” I ask.
“I don’t know. Can’t you figure that one out” Renee says. “Gosh, you have got a brain of your own, you know?”
“Well you always moan when I pick a shop” I say, but she doesn’t even bother to answer that. I take Lucy’s hand, before walking off towards the shops, with Renee trailing behind us. “Shall we go in build-a-bear and get you a cute little teddy?” I ask Lucy, in a babyish voice.
“Yay, I want a pink one, with rabbit ears” she replies in her adorable little voice. Even though she’s seven now, she’s still as cute as she was when she was three. Her hair is the same brown colour, which is like mine and her little button nose is just the cutest.
