SONDRA

I was working in the kitchen this time. I saw Kade come in, but I was too busy to acknowledge him. He cleared his throat & I looked at him.
"What're you doing Sondra?" Kade asked.
"Just washin' the dishes." I replied.
"Well, I just wanted to know if you would like to come down to the market with me."
"I guess. I have to pick up some food anyway." I put the kitchen supplies up & walked, with Kade, out the door. We went to the stable to get the horses. We hitched the horses onto the cart. I was about to take the reins when Kade grabbed them.
"I'll drive." He said & got in his seat. It was a long quiet ride to the market. When we got there Kade acted even more strange. He carried everything for me & it was last like that all day. After a while we noticed it was time to go home because the sun was going down. When we got back to house, he stopped me from going inside.
"Hey, I got this for you." Kade said & gave me a necklace. It was black and had a diamond in the middle, the chain was silver. It was beautiful. I hugged him & he happily hugged me back.
"Thank you, Kade." I said & kissed him on the cheek. I walked back to my sleeping quarters smiling.

KADE

I watched her walk away. I touched my cheek. The spot she kissed was warm. I walked back into the house. My brother, who was the new master of the house, saw me come in.
"Why're you smiling Kade?" He asked.
"No reason." I said. I was about to walk away, but Bishop grabbed my arm.
"Kade." He said. "Tell me why're smiling."
"I just gave Sondra a necklace & she thanked me." I said & he just shook his head. "What's wrong with giving Sondra a necklace? "
"It's not right for a white man to like a colored woman."
"How come?"
"Because it's just not right."
"Well, it's not right for my older brother to be unsupportive of me."
"I wouldn't be unsupportive if you would treat the colored girl as she is supposed to be treated."
"And how am I supposed to treat her?"
"Like a slave."
"Well, I'm not going to treat her like that. She is a lady & deserves respect."
"No she doesn't. No slave she be treated with respect."
"Well, I'm going to do as I please."
"No you won't, your under my authority."
"I hate your authority, I hate you, & I wish you weren't my brother!"
I ran off down the hall to my room. A little bit into the night I heard Mua'ah come into my room. Mua'ah took care of me when my mother died. She kind of replaced my mother.
"Ya know it's wrong to say you hate your brother."
"But, he doesn't understand."
"Sweetie, you don't have to say that. All you have to do is follow your heart. No matter what, you don't give up."
"Yes ma'am." I said & went to sleep.
