Chapter One

Rachel Adams walked down the windy Chicago streets, closing her coat tightly around her. Even though the weather was warm and windy, she felt a chill in her bones.. There was a dread surrounding her, a fear that would not go away..She knew the weather was not the only thing causing her to feel a chill. There was something about bad news that always shook her to the core. Whether it was something as minor as a bad grade or as dire as a failed course, she hated the way she felt in situations like this. It was as if she were not in control of her life, as if fate had taken over. Her life was about to change completely and not only her life but the lives of her sisters and motherl. She realized that she had made a mistake, one that would change the course of her entire existence. She held her head down and tried to figure out how she allowed this to happen.

The streets were quiet which was unusual for this time of day. Children were always playing games on this block, whether it was kickball double dutch or tag, children were alway running up and down the street, but for some reason, the entire block was quiet. There was not a soul on the street except Rachel. This only added to her mood. How was she going to tell Sonny about the baby. There was something ominous about telling a seventeen-year-old male that he was going to be a father. She had no idea how he would react, but she decided to tell him before she told her mother. She knew how her mother would react. Anger, rage, disappointment. These words best described how her mother would feel. She had worked two jobs ever since her father passed away and because of this, she had to have a certain amount of trust in her three girls. She trusted them to do their homework, keep the house clean, not run the streets and get into trouble. And they always did as they were told and behaved like "good girls". But things had been different lately. Joanna, her oldest sister had started working at a funeral parlor and she worked long hours so she was never at home and Lisa was always studying for a test or something, so she ended up by herself most of the time. It was kind of lonely but everything changed when she met Sonny

She reached a bench and sat down. As she considered her situation the tears flowed freely. She looked around again to see if anyone could see her crying, but she was all alone. She had never felt so alone in her entire life. She pulled her coat around her tighter as if to protect her unborn child from the cold. She had really made a mess of things. She knew that this pregnancy would not be good news to anyone including herself. She and her sisters were close, but she knew they would be mad as hell because she let herself get knocked up. And at sixteen! She was a baby herself. She knew that they would all stand beside her, but she also knew that this would hurt each one of them and change the way that they treated her. Gone were the carefree days of being a teenager. Those days would be replaced with responsibility, work and sacrifice. And if Sonny did not stand behind her, she would really be in a mess. He said she was the love of his life and deep down she knew he did not mean it. As she considered her situation, her mind drifted back to the first time she saw Sonny.

He was in the cafeteria talking to a group of people, mostly females. She was on her way out when she saw him. She literally froze in her steps. He was at least six feet tall, with copper colored skin. He was not what you define as handsome, but he was attractive, and there was something about him that made him stand out. He was a natural leader and everyone around him hung onto his every word.. She just stood there staring at him as if she was unable to move. He looked up at her and her heart skipped a beat. Then he smiled and she melted inside. She immediately turned and walked out into the hall and to her next class. She had no experience with boys (she was only fourteen) and she really did not know how to act in these types of situations. She did not see him again for a couple of days, but she never stopped thinking about him. About a week later, she was at her locker when she felt someone tap her on her shoulder. She turned and looked directly into his eyes.
