Dedicated to the most fascinating person ever, Lucy Ban, who always proclaimed that she was the most fantastic human that walked this Earth and never failed to entertain me. -Isabella Deng

CHAPTER 1: Skepticism

The wind blew in my face and I breathed in the fresh air. The trees that stood at the edge of the forest towered over us like ominous creatures. The stream I was walking along curved to the right, avoiding the footpath that led into the trees waiting branches. I glanced to my left and saw a lake, silhouetted against the setting sun, the pink and glorious that emanated from it were blurred and resembled more fantasy than present.

Kaitlyn, my best friend, was walking with haste toward the end of the stream, my eyes following her back as she searched for a broken twig's route. She had spotted it drifting smoothly on top of the stream, gracefully winding itself around the piles of grass and bullrushes that grew in the clear bottom of the brook. When she could no longer keep up with it, I stopped, looking at her with my head tilted, slightly bored and skeptical with her games.

"Should we hurry back?" I asked her. "I promised my mother that we would be back before dinner."

"Definitely," Kaitlyn said, with a disappointed frown on her face. She bit her lip and glazed at the setting sun floating across the pond.

We hurried back home toward my house. I thought about all the fun adventures Kaitlyn and I had, including the one where we had befriended Lucy. Being next door neighbors allowed the three of us to become close friends and get our families to branch out.

Despite the closeness between us, we were all unique. We all dressed so differently, one couldn't have imagined a more unlikely group.

Kaitlyn wore skirts and put her hair up in a ponytail, just like any other average girl. Lucy, on the other hand, loved wearing oddly patterned shirts from swirls to scribbles, that clashed horribly with her vibrant orange pants. She always wore her hair short, and curved inward toward her neck. I always wore casual dresses with some reference to a panda imprinted on the front with my hair in some weird unheard of updo.

Today, Kaitlyn was dressed in a white sweater, paired with a tan skirt. It looked soothing to the eye next to my black dress.

As Kaitlyn and I neared my house, we heard a voice calling our names.

"Kaitlyn! Isabella!"

We looked around—our school friend, Lucy, who was leaning out of my kitchen window. My eyes widened. Shoot, I thought. We're late! Even Lucy who always arrived late had beat us.

She rolled her eyes at me and put on a grumpy face.

I raised my eyebrows and started walking toward my house.

"Isabella, look!" Kaitlyn suddenly cried, ignoring Lucy. She elbowed me in the ribs and I tore my eyes away from Lucy to glance up at where she was pointing and saw an odd-looking bird perched on the overhang over my front porch. My first thought was that it looked a bit like a ball of tinsel.
