‘You ready?’ Becca asked as I finished applying my minimal make up. I took a deep breath in.
‘Not really’ I sighed. There’s no way I could be ready, not for this. Becca gave me a sympathetic smile and eventually brought me into a hug. We hadn’t really spoken properly since Saturday, I was pissed off at her for telling Beau, but right now I needed my best friend.
‘It’ll be okay, I promise’ she whispered into the hug. ‘At least you’ll know the truth’
I shivered at her last words. That was the problem, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to know the truth or not, whether it was Luke or Jai’s baby. Either way, I’ve lost Jai now, there’s no way he’s coming back.
‘Katy’s rung the school to tell them you won’t be in this morning and Jai said him and Luke had everything sorted too’ she smiled, handing me an apple. ‘They’re both here for you Lily, don’t worry’ she rubbed my arm reassuringly before grabbing her school bag and rushing off to school. I sighed once more, looking in the mirror and smoothing down my blouse. I kept replaying ‘don’t worry’ in my mind before I was interrupted by Jai and Luke knocking on the door.
‘Morning’ Luke smiled as I opened the door. I half smiled back and looked at Jai, standing awkwardly next to him.
‘Beau’s waiting in the car’ he mumbled before sloping off back to the car.
‘He’s a little nervous’ Luke half chuckled.
‘Aren’t we all’ I sighed before quickly grabbing my purse and locking the door behind me.
The car was silent, with only the quiet buzz of the radio in the background. Jai stared out the window, refusing to take his eyes off it. Whilst me and Luke sat apart in the back. He stretched out his hand and gently rubbed my thigh. I placed my hand on top of his and set it aside from my leg, giving him a slight squeeze. Now was really not the time.
‘Good luck bro’ Beau said to Jai as we pulled up outside the hospital. We all piled out of the car apart from Beau who would wait for us and pick us up later. We all warily walked into the hospital, the twins closely at my side.
‘Lily Green’ Luke said for me to the woman at the desk. She squinted at her computer screen before telling us to sit down in the waiting area.
I slid into one of the blue plastic chairs next to Jai, Luke sitting opposite us. I started nibbling my nails, like I always do when I’m nervous but Jai grabbed my hand and brought it into his.
‘It’ll be okay’ he whispered, giving my hand a slight squeeze. I could tell he didn’t even believe himself but his voice still gave me reassurance.
‘Lily erm Green?’ A small plump lady read off her clip board. I slowly stood up, bringing Jai up with me.
‘Please come on with me’ I asked, not letting go of his hand. He nodded and followed me into the room.
‘So’ the lady sat down on her swivel chair as me and Jai sat opposite her. ‘You two are both 17?’ she raised an eyebrow at our ages. Jai nodded, he was starting to get a little more confident.
‘And you two are together?’ she asked blankly.
I glanced at Jai who continued to stare into the distance.
‘Erm no, we’re not’ I replied.
She rolled her eyes and went back to look at her paperwork.
‘And you are Luke Brooks?’ she looked over her glasses at Jai.
‘No, he’s my brother’ Jai sighed like it was a daily saying.
‘Who’s Luke then?’ she shook her head, flicking through the sheets of paper. I explained everything to her as she jotted some notes down.
‘Right, well if you pop on the bed, it’s too early for us to assess the baby yet but we’ll take some blood and you should get your results by the end of the day’ she signalled for me to lie on the bed. I followed her instructions and held onto Jai as she did everything she needed to do. Jai then took my place and she carried out some similar tests.
‘I told you it would be fine!’ Luke brought us both into a hug once we came out of the room.
‘Luke Brooks?’ the same lady called almost immediately after we came out. Luke nodded and followed her.
‘I’m sorry, none of this was meant to happen.’ I said to Jai.
‘None of us meant for this to happen’ he replied locking his eyes to mine.
‘I mean, I was just supposed to come to Australia as part of this stupid exchange programme. I wanted to go surfing in the Australian waves and hold a koala and take a ride in a kangaroo. I wanted to experience going to a different school and maybe get a tan whilst doing so. Not fall in love an idiot then get pregnant’
Jai started chuckling to himself.
‘What?’ I laughed, playfully hitting his arm.
‘Ride a kangaroo?’ he raised an eyebrow and smiled, for the first time today.
‘I have weird dreams okay’ I smiled and rested my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes, shutting out the world.
The familiar smell of fish and chips from the local chip shop filled my nose as I opened the front door. I flung my keys down by the door followed the smell to the kitchen.
‘Hello gorgeous’ Jai smiled as he stole a chip from the side of one of the plates. I did the same and wrapped my arms around his torso, kissing his neck.
‘Good day at work?’ he asked. I shrugged and picked up one of the smaller plates, taking it through to the living room.
‘Mummy!’ Ruby jumped up from the sofa and hugged my legs. I chuckled and knelt down, handing her the plastic plate. She gave me a sweet kiss on the cheek then flopped down on the sofa, nibbling on one of her chips.
‘I talked about Daddy today at school’ she giggled.
‘What did you say baby girl?’ Jai chuckled, brushing her soft blonde hair with his fingers.
‘That you were an ostrich’ she looked up at her Daddy innocently.
I laughed as Jai nodded to her story.
‘Don’t you mean an Ozzy Ruby?’ I smiled at her. She shook her head.
‘Nope, an ostrich’
Jai and I caught each other’s eyes and smiled before he started to walk over to me and shook me.
‘Wake up Lily!’ ‘Lily!’
I rubbed my eyes to find Jai and Luke standing over me.
‘I think I fell asleep’ I rubbed my eyes and tried to focus them on the white hospital around me.
‘Come on, we need to go’ Luke said. I followed them both into the room from before and sat down in front of the snotty lady. She flicked through her paperwork and typed a few things into her computer, making the three of us more anxious than ever.
‘We do have the results back’ she eventually said.
She passed me a brown envelope.
‘We can wait until we get home if you want?’ Luke asked.
I shook my head and ripped the corner of the paper with my thumb. I slid out the papers and scanned down the writing. After what felt like reading a novel I finally came to the information I was looking for... a single tear rolled down my cheek as I re read the name over and over again.
This is probably really inaccurate and I doubt you can get DNA results back with a few hours but in this story you can :)
