Chapter 1

"Nikki! Come here now! I need to talk to you and I don't have all day so hurry up!" My stepfather mark yelled from our living room waking me up. I glanced at my phone for the time. 4:30 Thursday morning. I stumbled out of bed, and turned on the light to the room me and my 17 year old sister Courtney shared. I went over to the mirror and pulled my bright blue hair up into a messy bun then sat and checked my phone before leaving.

"Why do you always go out your way to piss him off?" Courtney asked me sounding hungover as ever. "Why not just so what he asks like I do? Then he basically ignores you." That was advise I should have taken but, being a fiery 16 year old from a bad family, growing up In a bad part of town, I was always looking for trouble, a fight, anything. Boy, was I gonna get one that night.

"The way I see it, he's just a drunk that married our mom so why should I have to do what he says?" I responded arrogantly. She just sighed and rolled over. I took my sweet time walking to our small living room which was hard to do since its jut my room, the kitchen, then the living room. All about the some size, tiny! I walked in and found mark sprawled out on out tearing brown couch, past the point of drunk, pat the point of dangerous. The room smelt like smoke, mold, and some other smell I didn't want to identify. My mom was a bartender and worked crazy hours so I almost never saw her, which was just fine with me since all she ever did was scream at me or complain about how much of a looser mark was. Mark however ha no job so, tragically, he was always home.

"What do you want mark? I have school today, it's the last week before Christmas break so I can't miss." I snapped at him

"Don't catch a attitude with me Nikki, I'm warning you, I'm not in the mood for any of your crap." He slurred. I rolled my eyes at him but didn't say anything else.

"How come my wallet is missing?"

"I don't know Mark, I don't know" I responded sighing.

"We'll you sure you didn't steal it?"

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure"

"We'll I don't believe you."

"That sounds like a personal problem." I sneered "plus why would I steal it, it's not like you have any money in it anyways."

" we'll hand it over or were gonna have a problem, me and you."

"We'll, I already have a problem with your face so that's nothing new for me" now he had hit me before, but usually just a shove or slapped my face, nothing to big. But that night he was very drunk, and very mad. Never a good mix. I was mad to though, he just accused me of stealing! Now I had done pretty low things before but steal, really?

"What?" He spat

"You heard me" I said glaring. Then he punched me in the eye. I had been in my share of fights so I knew never to act like it hurt, like you were shocked. But it had never been against a grown man, only against a guy once. For a second I saw nothing and felt dizzy, when I was better I found my self on the ground with mark standing over me. Before thinking I shoved myself up, grabbed his neck, and hit his head against the wall. I had the element of surprise but he was bigger and stronger so he quickly shoved me into the kitchen. I fell against the stove which my mom had apparently forgotten to turn off before leaving for work. My right hand landed on the back burner and I felt like it had caught in fire, which in a way, I guess it had. I moved forward ignoring the screaming pain in my hand and shoved him back. But he predicted it and grabbed me, and socked me in the nose, then punched me again in the lip. He growled something that I missed. But I knew it was only a matter of time before he hit me again. I reached behind me scrambling for anything I could get my hands on. I got hold of a iron pot which I swung forward and hit his head with. He dropped to the ground, out cold. I quickly ran into my room, put on old jeans, a stained grey tank top, a batman sweatshirt that was two sizes to big that also was stained and had holes, and worn out converse. I grabbed a empty bag on my bed and quickly put another pair of old jeans that were full of holes, only not the cute kind the "we have no money so these are my sisters hand me down jeans from years ago" kind, another plain grey tank top, my wallet, and phone in the bag. Crystal just rolled over. I ran into the kitchen to find mark stirring. I ran out the door and locked it behind me. Once I got outside I just started walking. I didn't know where I was going, but I was guessing more into the heart of Las Anglos. I walked through my neighborhood,if you could call it that, down the street, past all the drug dealers, gangs, and flat out creeps, without flinching. Because at the end of the day, that is, ahem, WAS my home. Where I grew up, where they brought my little sister home, where my little sister died. I couldn't wait to get out of here. I could see the sun beginning to get brighter, I knew I had to decide weather or not to go to school. Before I could though, I needed to see how bad it looked, how much damage he did. I thought about where I should go to clean up. Not my best friends Lilly and Jenna houses, that would be the first place he looked for me. Other friends? Wait I didn't have those. Boyfriend? Nope, nonexistent. Well I guess School would have to wait.
