→ The Hanahaki disease is a fictional disease in which the victim coughs up flower petals when they suffer from one-sided love. It ends when the beloved returns their feelings (romantic love only; strong friendship is not enough), or when the victim dies. It can be cured through surgical removal, but when the infection is removed, the victim's romantic
feelings for their love also disappear."I told you already Lev, I can't be your manager," you said walking to school, a rather tall male following behind you. Lev and you walk to school together almost everyday, as you both lived near each other. You're a first year at Nekoma High and your childhood friend wants you to join the school's volleyball team as a manager.
"(Y/n)-senpai! Join the volleyball club as my manager! You've got to!" Lev pleaded.
"Don't call me your senpai, we're both first years," you dismissed.
You both reach the entrance of the school.
Lev walked into front of you and bowed down. "Pleasee~ (Y/n)-chan! We need you!" People are staring... You sighed.
"Lev, get up. You already know I'm not one for sports," You told simply, walking around him to your locker. "and don't cause a scene, we don't need anymore people staring." Lev felt a little deflated at your rejection to his offer but he knew he'd try again later. "Maybe during lunchtime when they're in a good mood," Lev muttered to himself.

"Alright everyone! That signals the end of this class, eat your lunch wherever and meet back here for you next class," your teacher concludes. You start to fish out your bento from your book bag. Once you've acquired said bento, you stand up from your seat and begin to head towards the rooftop, though, before you can exit the classroom door a tall being intercepts you. Did I mention Lev's in your class? No? Oh, oops...
"Please manage my team!" Lev bowed in front of you once more. You simply walked around him even though you felt his depressing aura from behind you. You dismissed it and rushed away before he can ask you again.
Once Lev was pulled from his thoughts he took a cereal bar from his bag and started looking for you.
He was going to ask why. Why were you declining his offer. He wanted to know.
Eventually he got to the rooftop and took a bite of the cereal bar. What he saw wasn't what he expected. There you were sitting in a circle of colorful haired boys, eating your bento and smiling along with them. You spot Lev from the corner of you eye and waved him over.
What was this feeling Lev was feeling? Could it be jealousy? Heartbreak maybe? No, that would be too much. Anyways, Lev was feeling some sort of pain when he saw you conversing with other males so casually; especially when he didn't know them. Growing up together he'd never think he'd have to worry about people he didn't know. He thought you'd tell him everything, being childhood friends and all.
"Hey (Y/n)-chan, who're these people? Why are you having lunch with people I've never heard of?" Lev frowned as he spoke, he didn't try to hide how he felt. How earnest...
"Lev! Come meet my club!" You smiled sweetly as he neared. Lev furrowed his brows. "Club..? Is this why you kept rejecting me?"
"Yeah, sorry about that.. meet the photography club!" Lev scanned the group. So many people with different hair colors... pink.. blue...
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't think I'd have to tell you everything.."
"But don't friends tell each other everything? We're childhood friends! R..right?" Lev clenched his fist. It's your turn to frown.
"I don't have you tell you everything. We were childhood friends. Remember that," you snapped lightly. You were tired of his constant questions yet you still regretted what you said. "w-wait.. Lev.. I didn't mean.." you tried forming a sentence but it was too late. Lev had ran away with tears forming in his eyes and an surging pain in his chest.
...
Pain.. it hurts. No shit, it does, but won't it eventually stop? It feels like something's trying to escape his chest.
Lev has a coughing fit, his throat hurts, it burns. The coughing and choking only stops when he manages to get something out of his throat.
A flower...
Such a beautiful flower..
'That came from me?!' Lev thought.
Lev got up from where he was crouched down, and headed towards his next class. 'I'll ask Yaku-san about it during practice'
That day Lev ate lunch alone.
...All throughout class Lev avoided talking to you. He doesn't want you angry at him. You wanted to apologize. Things could work out.. right?
...
Yaku wore a grave expression as he listened to Lev. "It's called the hanahaki desease. Flowers grow in your lungs as a result of your one-sided love." Yaku looked up at Lev with pity as he spoke.
"Ha..na...haki?" Lev repeated. He looked at the flower in his palm.
"That's right. The flower right there is a type of cherry blossom called Winter Flowering."
"Win..ter Flower...ing?" He paused, a complexed look over his features before he spoke again. "That's so pretty! ...It's.. so pretty.." He said with a bitter smile.
