When Sparks Fly

PROLOGUE:

It was an hour before the end of the year...

The same hour that I realized...

      That I've fallen in love.

My heart synchronized to the beat of fireworks exploding, signaling a start of a new year yet once again. And there he was, beside me; our distance was about an inch or so, making it even harder for me to breathe. Our hands, as if on cue, accidentally touched when the first firework exploded. His face was full of astonishment as he gazed upon the various colors exploding in the sky.

My lips curved upwards seeing the innocent, childish side of his. Staring at him must've caught his attention, which was why he directed his gaze at me. He flashed a smile at me, making my checks turn crimson red.

"I'll never fall for a guy like him." I used to say, a million times as a matter-of-fact. But now, here I am, celebrating the holidays with the person that could make my heart beat fast crazily like it was the only thing I knew how to do. The only person, who's smile can leave me gasping for air.

Growing up with each other, sharing most of our childhood memories together...

And now, after years have come and gone in a flash, we haven't changed a bit. Deep inside our hearts, we were still the same.

"Heeeeey Riley! You like Liam don't you?"

       "No, I don't."

       "Hmmm? I don't believe you!"

       "I don't!"

       "You do."

       "Don't."

       "Do."

      "Not."

"Whatever Riley-wiley! I know you like Liam."

      "I said I don't!"

"Hmmm, Riley! Your boyfriend is here!"

     "What?! He's not! "

"Riley and Liam, sitting on a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!"

***

I chuckled softly, remembering our childhood days.

You were right Alliyson. I do like him.

Spending our annual holidays like Christmas and New Year together has been some sort of habit of ours. It's been treated like a tradition since all of our parents have been the best of friends. Which was exactly four years after I was born.

"Mowwy, I don't wanna." I whimpered as I tightened my grip on my mom's blue Sunday dress.

"It's okay sweetie, he wants to be your friend." she said, gesturing the stranger that was my 'family friend' as they call it. "Now, go and introduce yourself."

My mom gave me a quick push forward, forcing me to be acquainted with the guy in front of me.

"I-I'm Riley." I grinned sheepishly, giving a shy wave.

I looked at him, noticing his features: he was about 5 years old or so (which means he's exactly a year older than me) , hair that was ebony and those deep brown orbs that was rather... well, maybe just a little... charming.

"Hi Riley." the stranger said, giving me a rather awkward look. "I'm Liam."

" So..." he trailed off, rubbing his neck out of awkwardness. "What do we do now?"

I gave him a quick shrug.

"Yeah, thought so." he replied.

We made eye contact; his deep brown orbs that somehow shimmered employed into mine...

We knew exactly what we were going to do.

"Tag, your it!" I exclaimed, happily running away.

"Oh yeah?" he said, smiling. "Not so fast Riley!"

After all this time, who would've thought that this year would be different than all the others?

Definitely not me, I never visualized that this person standing beside me would mean more than just a childhood friend.

Who can I blame? After all, Cupid has his mysterious ways. We can never pick who we can fall in love with. Though sometimes love seems rather hard and impossible. Even if we deny it, no matter how hard you try, you'll just end up loving the person even more.

"Happy new year," he said, directing his gaze at me. "Riley."

I froze at my spot, gripping the entire situation.

You like him.

I mentally slapped myself, snapping back to reality. I cracked a smile, letting out a tiny chuckle. "Liam, I wish you a super duper, ultra mega, to the highest of the heavens jolly New Year."

"As dramatic as ever."

"Why, I take that as a compliment."

He chuckled softly, before directing at the fireworks display again. "It's so pretty." he breathed, staring at the night sky.

I blushed slightly at him statement. I knew he didn't mean me... of course he didn't. That would be stupid, impossible and preposterous.

But I wouldn't mind hearing that from him though.

"Yes, yes it is."
