I finally found the potions room, all the way down in the Slytherin dungeons. I came upon a door that said "PROF. SNAPE" on a plaque. The words "POTIONS" and "DADA" were written in smaller letters underneath it. I opened that door to find students sitting in columns, two to a table. At the front of the room was a blackboard, with bookshelves on either side. Along the sides of the classroom, there were countertops and locked glass cabinets storing small cauldrons, and loads of jars with labels too small to read from where I stood. They reminded me of the science labs I worked at back home when I was attending muggle school. Directly in front of the blackboard was a desk, and at that desk sat a man with long black hair clad in long black robes. He noticed me and motioned for me to come up to the desk. I walked up the centre aisle between the students' desks and faced him. He was looking through a list of names written on a bit of parchment.
"Name, please," Snape said in a deep voice that startled me.
"Y/n Loesser," I reply quietly. He nods his head slightly.
"Are you related to an Evelina Loesser?" He asked, his cold eyes meeting mine.
"Uh...yes sir, Evie's my sister. She told me how much she liked your class," I lied. Evie had done well in potions, but she disliked Snape just as much as everyone else did.
"I see. Let us hope you're not as mediocre as she was," he drawls. Evie, mediocre? I thought to myself as the flames sparked up again. No, he wouldn't talk about my sister that way. There were several words I could use to describe Evie, but "mediocre" definitely was not one of them. My anger was burning me alive on the inside, but I wouldn't let myself show it.
"Yes sir, I'll certainly try," I say with my sweetest smile. I hate him already.
"Seating is in alphabetical order, so you'll be sitting next to Miss Lovegood. Fourth desk on your right," Snape says, pointing to a familiar set of blue eyes. I smile and walk back down the aisle to sit next to her.
"I remember you," Luna says. "We met on the train."
"Yeah," I say. "Luna, right?"
"Mmhm, and you're Y/n. I like your ribbon," she said, touching the small blue bow at the end of my braid. "Blue keeps the nargles away." I scooted closer to her.
"What are nargles? I've never heard of them before." She opens her mouth to talk, but the room suddenly gets quiet. All heads turn to Snape, who was standing in front of the desk, waiting to speak.
"Good morning, people," he begins. "For those of you who don't know, I am Professor Snape. I am the head of the Slytherin house, and I've been teaching here for the last thirty years. And in those thirty years, I've seen it all. I've seen students who went on to do brilliant things and students who went on to be...ordinary. I've noticed that the ordinary students were always the ones who never took my lectures seriously. In my classroom, you will learn how to make something out of nothing. You will learn how to brew and bottle greatness, you will learn how to concoct potions that can infatuate, ensnare, transform, and even kill with a single drop. I am more than willing to teach you everything I know. The question is...are you willing to learn?" Snape flicks his wand at the blackboard and a piece of chalk flies up to write "RULES" on it.
"The primary rule in my classroom is safety," he says, slowly walking down the aisle. "Magic, in the hands of a fool, is deadly. That's the curious thing about magic. It can save a life just as easily as it can take one. It's both a valuable tool and a weapon of mass destruction. I've seen my share of accidents in this class, some of them more severe than others. And all of these accidents were a direct result of negligence," he droned on. Luna leaned over to whisper in my ear.
"Meet me in the common room after classes," she said. Snape (somehow) heard her and faced us.
"And that brings me to my next rule, Miss Lovegood," he said menacingly. "You are not to speak during my lesson unless you are spoken to. One point from Ravenclaw." I looked over at her. Luna grinned and shrugged her shoulders, unfazed.
And in that tiny fraction of a second, I realized something. She didn't care that people gossip about her and her odd family, she didn't care what other people had to say about what she said or did or believed in, she didn't care that talking to me had cost her a point from Ravenclaw, and not even Snape in all his shirty-ness (as Cedric put it) seemed to scare her.
Luna Lovegood feared nothing, and I couldn't decide whether I wanted to be her or kiss her.
