Nora was the only girl left out of all candidates. The five of them were standing in a line, eyeing those that have lost. Ji-yeon was rummaging through her things, searching for something while Jungkook kept whispering to her quite aggressively. Ji-yeon simply kept shaking her head and proceeded to take out five slips of paper. She bowed quickly and walked over to the victors, leaving the Prince alone and agitated.
"All of you will received a slip with information. You cannot share that information with anyone, destroy the slips as soon as you memorize the sentence." Ji-yeon explained calmly, and gave everyone a piece of paper. All of them, not really sure of what to do next, stood a bit awkwardly. Finally Nora turned the paper and read the words on it. I am a spy. Cold sweat started to form on her forehead, quickly filling into droplets and running down her temples. What is going on? She bit her lip and took a short glance at her neighbors paper. I am a killer. She lowered her eyes, not wanting to let Ji-yeon see. A quick wave of relief overtook her. They don't know anything. It's just a game. Nora crumpled the paper in her hand, looking Ji-yeon straight into the eyes. The latter caught her gaze and nodded to Nora. "You're free to enjoy the evening. The last trial will start tomorrow." Ji-yeon spun on her heel and walked away.
The sun had already set, when Nora decided to go take a breath of fresh air. The boys in the main room kept talking about their families and Nora suddenly felt as if she was suffocating. Walking down the main road, she placed her steps carefully. The moon was hidden behind the clouds, taking all of the light with it. A sudden movement from the side shook her and Nora barely managed not to scream, when a hand grabbed her elbow and pulled her behind one of the buildings.
"What the actual-" Nora began to cuss, but she quickly recognized prince Jungkook, who was staring at her with raised eyebrows. Nora quickly took a step back, hitting her back to the wall. "Your Highness, I am incredibly sorry, I didn't recogn-" Jungkook quickly grabbed her arm, interrupting her. "I don't care. Listen, I can't be here, I don't have much time. Do you remember the information that Ji-yeon gave you?" He spoke in a hushed tone, scrambling his words, never lowering his eyes from Nora's. She nodded quickly, sensing the tension she didn't dare to speak. "The last trial is going to be terrible. I asked them to not do this, but unfortunately I do not have enough power to influence these things yet." Jungkook spat out, knitting his eyebrows and forming a disgusted expression. Nora mirrored him, furrowing her brows as well.
"They will torture you, Nora. They gave all of you information, and they will be checking how well you can keep secrets." He finished quietly. Nora took a sharp breath, still processing the information. She expected something like this, Jimin was sure that the trials will not be too simple, and they did seem rather easy up till now. Nora swallowed hardly and finally spoke up. "Why are you telling me this?" She locked her eyes to his, whereas Jungkook was taken aback by her inquiry. "I wanted to warn you. There is going to be a time limit, I'm not sure for how long - an hour, two, more? I don't know. But you need to hold out until then. Will you be able to do so for me?" Jungkook smiled at her apologetically, while Nora simply kept processing his words.
"Why are you helping me?" She asked again, Jungkook tilted his head in response. "You sent me the letter, you've helped me with the mountain trial, now with this. I just don't understand.." Nora admitted quietly. Jungkook quickly raised his brows in amusement, flashing Nora a smirk. "Because I want you on my side." He answered simply, as if this was supposed to explain everything. "I don't want the King's people around me. I want to have my own. And since your background is as.. as it is.." He started to stumble on his words, but Nora quickly shook her head and smiled.
In a way she could understand him, in his position she'd also want someone who she could trust, a complete outsider not influenced by the King's friends. A new fire started to form in Nora's pit. The moment Jungkook spoke of his father, Nora caught a glimpse of resentment in his voice. It was barely audible, but it did not escape her ears. So you don't like him too much too. Jungkook kept looking around, as if afraid that someone will catch them, his fingers still wrapped around Nora's wrist. Realizing this, Nora quickly removed her arm from his grasp, and this brought Jungkook's attention back to her.
