I probably had my worst night ever at Carver's and probably the worst sleep, too. I had a horrible pain in my neck. Carver placed out a different task for Tavia, so I was left as a night guard with Troy. The only good thing of it was that I got my gun, hatchet, screwdriver and knife back, and also Troy's foolishness of doing a favor for me by staying up alone all night, so I could rest, thought that would give him a chance. I took place in the storage. Squated on the floor, leaned against the wall, put my two arms on my knees and my head on my arms. Wasn't the most comfortable position to sleep in, but at least I had a few hours sleep.
- Yo, new girl. Get up. - I woke up to Wyatt's voice.
- Wha-what is it?
- Got you breakfast. 'Cuz later you will be working with Tavia and you will not have time.
- Aha. Thank you. What is it?
- My special family recipe.
- What does it have?
- Beans fried with jerky.
- Oh wow. - I honestly laughed at that point.
- Gotta be moving. I'm out streghtening our defense. And before I forget. I grabbed this for you. Booze. - and he gone out.
- But Wyatt.. - I yelled after him but he was already too far. - I do not drink... Eh.
- You really got them boys doing anything for you. - Tavia laughed impressed.
- Best that I did not have to do shit. Do you think I could make them to help us?
- I am not sure it is a good idea to involve them. Hey, where's the Booze from?
- I don't know. Wyatt got this for me.
- Damn. What a gentleman. - she said ironically. - Come on. We got work to do. - she pulled me up. She looked at me serious and whispered. - Listen, act like you are guarding. Just walk around trying to see for any way out. I will do the same. Make sure you do not get too obvious. And as much I heard, Nick will be working with Brian and Luke on the fence, wiring it up. You can go out anytime. Careful with your words, Vince will be there, watching them.
- Who is Vince even?
- A short, black haired, asian dude. Ain't easy to miss with anybody. And hey, you eating that?
- Have it. And you can have the be - I did not have time to finish. She grabbed the booze out of my hand.
- Thanks. I'll take that, too. Oh and hey. I forgot to give you this yesterday. - she handed me a walkie-talkie.- In case you need something, you can reach me out.
- Okay.
- Bye.
- Yeah, see ya.
I took my way straight to Nick and the other guys. Brian was wiring the fence, while Nick and Luke boarded it.
- You do not look so well. - Luke worried and the other two guys turned to me aswell.
- Tell me something I do not know already.
- Baby.. - Nick came close, grabbed my wrists tenderly and wanted to kiss, but I pulled and turned my head away, he could have only reached my chin. - Darling? What is it? - he put one of his hands on my chin and turned my head back to him.
- Aren't you mad? And the others? - I looked down.
- No, why would we, bae?
- What's wrong, niece?
- Because I was "hired" to work full time with Carver's men?
- Darling, that was not your choice. I have no reason getting mad, and neither others do. - he put both his hands on my cheeks. - Everything is good. - he kissed me.
- How are you guys holding up?
- Shitterly. - said Brian.
- Imagine sleeping on those beds.. My back hurts horribly. - whined Luke.
- How about Rebecca and Alvin? And Sarah? Is she better?
Luke frowned.
- Becca and Alvin are getting worse over time and Sarah is not doing any better either, in case, she is feeling worse without you.
- God... I feel so bad... I feel like this is my fault. - I shook my head.
- Bullshit. Don't blame yourself, sweetheart.
Nick hugged me close. I put my head on his chest to listen to his heartbeat and started rubbing his back. He put one of his hands on my waist, meanwhile with the other he was playing with my hair, rubbing my cheek, and giving few kisses on my forehead and lips.
- You should really start working, unless you want Carver to make your life harder here.
- Yeah, thanks, Vince.
I raised my head up and looked at Nick.
- I have to go.
- Don't...
- I must, Nick.. I don't wish to, but I must...
He sighed disappointedly.
- Take care. - he kissed me.
- You too.. Was nice to see you guys a bit...
- You too, Smirre. - Brian walked up to me and hugged me, too.
- Bye, Luke.
- Be careful, sis. - he hugged me.
I had a bad feeling after I left them. I missed Nick and I felt pity for them, for having such horrible circumstances. I also felt bad for Rebecca and Alvin.. I was about to search for Tavia and help at the armory, when I heard Rebecca fighting painfully with her tears. I wanted to help them. I decided to give them their baby back, with whatever consequences I'd have to take. I sneaked into Carver's office, but he was nowhere to be found. I reached out to Tavia through the walkie-talkie.
- Via, where is Carver? - I whispered.
- He is busy somewhere with Hank. He didn't say, but he is not here. Why?
- Good. Thank you.
- Girl, what are you doing?
- Probably? Get myself killed.
And I left her.
Aj. was asleep in Carver's chair. I picked him up and hurried to the others.
- Hey. - I opened the door.
- Mea, you are back. And my baby.. Oh my god... - Rebecca melted and took her baby back. - Thank you!
- Thanks, kid. - smiled Alvin.
- I gotta hurry. Take care.
- Be good, dear.
I closed the door and hurried to Troy as fast as I could have and pretended I did nothing. The only thing that bothered was Carver. What he is going to do, how's he going to react, what I'm gonna do. The day passed so fast, probably because of my nervosity. Carver and Hank came back not much before dark. He went straight to his office. I gulped.
- What is it? You are so pale. - Troy asked.
In a flash we saw Carver's not really happy face and making his way to the room where he kept the others. We heard Rebecca and Alvin, screaming and yelling from all of sudden. Carver hurridly returned to us with the baby in his hands. His head was nearly red from anger. He looked at me with killer eyes.
- In my office. NOW. - he pointed at the room. - You've got a hearing problem? I said NOW. FUCKING MOVE!
- Hey, Boss. It is not nee -
- Troy, shut up, shut up, shut the fuck up. C'mon. - he looked at me.
He sat down with AJ. in his arms and told me to have a seat. He seemed now calmer, but still full of anger.
- You know what you did.
- I just..
- You do NOT enter my office, take my son and bring him back to the asshole Alvin and Rebecca.
- He is NOT yours. He never was.
- You know. You are a tough girl. You don't get easily scared like others, or at least you can hide and control it. You look in the eye and stand strong. Pretty impressive. You can stay cold, when it's needed. But. There is something I cannot tolerate. - he put down the boy, stood up and walked to me.
He looked madly at me and punched my face so hard I fell to the ground.
- And that is, when someone fucks with my family. - he kicked me strongly in the stomach. I mourned up from pain.
- Did you really think you can just go against me and do things otherwise? - he squatted down and hit me in the right eye. I tried to reflect the hit , but he twisted my arm and hit my left eye, too.
- Listen and learn one fucking thing. Don't you fucking repeat the same fucking thing again, else I will fucking kill you. AM I UNDERSTOOD? - he started punching me rapitidly, in the eye and face 'til I started bleeding and both my eyes turned "black".
He grabbed me by my T-Shirt and asked.
- Have you heard me? - and punched my nose. It instantly started bleeding.
- Now. Hope you will re-consider your staying.
- Fuck you... - I mourned weakly.
- Heh. - he threw me on the floor, grabbed his gun out and shot me in the hips. - Get yourself off the ground. - he laughed at left me there.
I tried getting up, but I was really feeble. I've kept falling back. I started becoming dizzy and I hardly could breath. My eyes got blurry and I could have seen in spots only.. Then they slowly closed down...
