You weren't surprised when Charles Xavier came knocking at your door. He'd visited once before, when he was still looking for a team some years ago. You'd both decided that you were too young to fight, but the years had flown by and you were now in your late teens, thus the visit. You couldn't see who else was with him through your bedroom window, but you assumed it was the rest of his team. You had the power to control and create frequencies in the air, which meant you could do anything from create an earthquake to take down the radio networks across an entire state. You had been practicing with your powers since Xavier had visited you last, and you knew you were ready for a fight.

When you open the door, he greets you with a tired smile. "Good morning, Y/N. It's good to see you again. May we come in?" You nod, but can't help but notice something's off. "Your powers- by now you should've looked into my mind-" He cuts you off smoothly. "I don't have them anymore. I was injured in the fight in Cuba, and I chose to walk instead of using my powers." You're stunned. Maybe it's for the best that you didn't go with him all those years ago. He continues speaking as he walks through the door. "I've come with a few associates. This is Logan, Hank, and-" His voice fades to a distant hum. Standing before you is Peter Maximoff. The boy you broke up with exactly one year ago. Seeing him now, you're hit with an onset of memories.

You and Peter are walking home from school, joking with each other in that easy way you always do. You don't know how long you've been in love with him, but it doesn't matter- he'd never feel the same way. When you finally reach your front door, you turn to look back at him one last time, and can't help but get lost in his eyes. Before you know it, he's kissing you. You look up at him in surprise, and he smiles. "I couldn't wait any longer."

You and Peter are laughing in the middle of a fair. He's brought you some cotton candy, and you share it whilst walking around. The sweetness of the candy dissolves on your tongue, and the golden sun warms your skin. Life is good.

You and Peter are driving late at night. The windows are rolled down, and the wind whips at your hair. You lean over and kiss him, just because you can.

You are alone. You're not quite sure what has happened, or why you did it, but you are surrounded by destruction. Details are coming back to you, of how you lost control of your powers, of how the walls of this house collapsed around you, of your sister's cry of pain. She is fine, you saw her terrified and running away from you, but her arm is broken. This is all your fault.

You keep losing control. You don't know why. You had such control over it before, but the radio keeps changing stations around you and the ground starts to shake when you stay still for too long. You haven't spoken to anyone in days, afraid you'll get too close to them and hurt them too.

Peter keeps coming over. He knows something happened, some accident that hurt your sister, but he doesn't know why. On one of these visits, the tremors start up again and you do your best to control them but you can't help but feel the vibrations building inside of you, desperate to be let out. The second he leaves, the walls of the house start to crack. You have to save him from yourself.

Peter looks shell shocked. You can tell he's trying his best to look nonchalant, but when you told him you were breaking up with him it's like you could feel his heart break. You love him still, love him with all of your heart, but you're terrified that you'll hurt him like you hurt your sister. Once he leaves, you bury your face in your hands and cry, desperate sobs racking your body. You have now ruined the one good thing in your life.

A few days later, you pack up your things and move. You can't bear to stay in the same house, go to the same school, and hear the same whispers from everyone around you. You don't go far, just outside the town, but far enough that the neighbours don't know your name or your story. You practice with your powers for hours every day, and after months pass, you finally learn control. It's a bittersweet success, because although you are now safe to be around people, the only person you want to see has hated you from the moment you said goodbye.

"-And Peter." You blink, and remember where you are. Peter is frozen where he is, and Xavier is just realizing this when you quickly move away from the door. "It's good to meet you all." You stammer out, and take a seat. Peter is here. He looks just like you remembered, and as he sits down you realize that you still love him just as much as the day you left him. It's a shame he'll never feel the same.

"Miss L/N, we're here because we need your help on a mission. Erik is in prison, and we need to break him out so he can aid in convincing Raven not to kill a certain government official." You laugh incredulously. "You want me to help you break into the Pentagon?" Logan nods in agreement. "See, that's what I said. I don't know who this kid is, and we've already got a team. Why drag someone else in?" Xavier sighs. "I was thinking early this morning, and I realized that we need a better guarantee that security won't come after us. Y/N can-" You realize that he's about to talk about your powers, and you panic. Peter can't know! "I am good with, uh, communications." Charles looks somewhat confused as to why you don't mention your powers, but nods. "Yes. We all have our parts in the plan, but we need you as backup to make sure everything runs smoothly." Well, you've been hiding out here for long enough. You might as well help with Xavier's plan, especially if it means you'll see Peter again. "I'm in. When do we leave?"

As everyone is heading back to the car, Xavier stops you. He waits until everyone else has left the room before speaking quietly. "Why don't you want me speaking about your powers?" You sigh and tell him. "I used to date Peter. About a year ago, I had a lapse in control over my abilities. I ended up destroying my house and injuring my sister. I realized that if I kept seeing him, I would hurt him too, so I pushed him away. He can't know about my powers." Xavier gets a funny look on his face, like he knows more than you do, but he just shakes his head. "As long as it doesn't get involved in the mission, it's fine. But," he adds, with a final look towards you, "It would be good to speak with him about it. Secrets are rarely kept for long in a world of mutants." And with that, he walks off, leaving you to wonder just how much Xavier knows, and why Peter is involved with him.
