I've never written anything like this before but a couple of stories I've been reading have inspired me to try and write something of my own! This first chapter is a little short but it's just setting the scene for future chapters if you want to read more. I'd love to know what you think!
"You, you're kidding right?" even with poor reception she could hear the shock in his voice, could only imagine the look on his face. She didn't blame him for being surprised, she'd never expected to make this phone call either.
"I wish I was" she whispered, hearing nothing but a sigh in response, "I'm sorry Taye, I didn't…"
"I know" he sighed again, "it's not your fault, I, we… do you know what you're going to do?"
"No, no I… " he heard the quiver in her voice, they'd spent almost two years trying, unsuccessfully, for a second baby and his, now ex, wife, was calling him to tell him she was pregnant, six weeks after they'd finally admitted that their marriage wasn't working any more and he'd left their family home.
"It was the night I left wasn't it?" it was a stupid question. Before that night it had been months since they'd been that intimate, they'd barely touched each other for weeks, but then they'd both found themselves spending one last night together, a night that now had bigger consequences than either of them could have ever imagined.
"Yeah, I haven't, there's been no one else" Idina wiped at her eyes, she'd hated dragging their marriage out, desperately trying to make things seem normal for their son, but she hated this even more, hated the loneliness on the nights Walker was with his father, hated how everything seemed so empty, so different now, how she'd put Walker through the one thing she'd always tried to protect him from.
"No, no, I believe you, it's just, it's really shit timing isn't it?"
"Yeah" she sighed again, "it is" she found herself wondering if this had happened six months ago, would they have stayed together, desperately clinging to anything they could, trying to stay together for the sake of their children or would they still have separated.
"I'm not… If you keep it, I'm not going to come back, I'll do what I can to help you, of course I will but we can't just go back to how things were, it wouldn't be fair on Walker, it wouldn't be fair on you."
She understood, she knew if he did come back it would only be for the baby, and he was right, that wouldn't be fair on anybody, as much as she might wish they could go back in time, their relationship would never go back to it was, "if?" It was the word that had stuck in her mind, did that mean he wanted her to have an abortion? He didn't want her to keep the baby?
"You've got the new show, I know how much you've been looking forward to it, I know how hard you've worked on it and if, well, if you didn't want to have this baby, I'd understand. I don't have to change anything if you have this baby, you'd have to give up so much, and I, if you didn't want to do that, well, there are other options and whatever you choose I'd support you."
"Thank you."
"You don't need to thank me Dee. I erm, I didn't want to say anything until everything was sorted but I've had a few tv offers and I think I'm going to take them, but they're in LA, so if you do keep it, of course I'll support you financially but I'll not be here to help you in person, you'd have Walker and a baby and..." his silence allowed her mind to finish the sentence for him, 'you'd be on your own.'
"Okay" her heart sank, not at the thought of Taye moving across the country, but at how broken their son would be when he found out. "Are you… does Walker know?"
"No, of course not, I was always going to tell you first, I just wanted to be sure it was a certainty first. We can talk about how we tell him when I know when I'll be leaving, if you want me to tell him or you want to tell him together, I just, I thought you would want to know, it's something to take into consideration when you…"
"When I decide whether or not to abort our baby" Idina finished for him.
"Yeah." The line was silent for a minute before Taye spoke again, "I need to go and get Walker from daycare, I can call you later if you…"
"No" she interrupted, "no I, I'll call to say goodnight to Walker but I, I'll be okay."
Taye wasn't sure about that, he couldn't remember the last time she'd sounded so defeated, so broken, but he knew better than to force her to talk to him, "okay, call me if you need anything."
"Yeah" Idina sighed softly, "I will."
