"Nidorino! I choose you!" I screamed over the roaring fans that filled the colosseum fit for a Galar region pokémon gym. My arm wound up with the pokéball clasped in my hand before I tossed it out into the open battleground. The red and white spherical device split open and a red light spilled out of it. The pokéball flung back to my hand as the light expanded and took shape. The light stretched up 175 feet in the air and formed into something with a human structure. The bipedal legs, the arms, and the torso formed a humanoid shape, but several spikes formed along the giant shape's spine. Instead of a human head, something more primal formed with huge ears and a horn jutting from the forehead. The light solidified into a giant anthro nidorino! He stood in the very center of the vast battlefield with his back to me.

The nidorino still had the distinct features of its species. Lilac, thick hide with darker purple spots covered the pokémon's otherwise human-like body. Sharp claws formed at the tips of his fingers and his three dinosaur-like toes. Jagged rabbit-like ears poked up from the side of his head, with a green hue on the inside of his ears. His head, while rounded like a human's, still formed the look of a nidorino, complete with horn and two long fangs poking out.

The pokémon reared his head back and roared as he stood naked (like most pokémon) in the center of the stadium. The hundreds of people in the stands cheered. Their cacophony washed down on us, filling me and nidorino with excitement. Nidorino looked over his shoulder at me. His right amber eye locked onto me. I offered him a thumbs up, causing the beast of a pokémon to grin.

A red flash caused Nidorino to look forward again. I looked through the gap between his legs to see the red light forming into Agatha's first pokémon. The light stretched taller than nidorino, a little over 100 feet taller! The light stopped at 295 feet tall and formed another humanoid figure. While nidorino's form was fit and lean, this pokemon had a girth to it. A more rounded belly puffed out along with a barrel chest. His skin solidified into a dark purple but did not really look like skin or fur. There was an ethereal look to it. Visually, it looked solid and smooth, but on closer inspection, it shifted and rippled like shadow or smoke. Two diagonal spikes protruded from the top of its head, resembling ears, while other spikes running down the back of the head and spine resembled tufts of spiky hair. A tiny tail-like spike protruded just above its backside. The scarlet eyes and the big toothy grin made it clear this pokémon was a gengar. This was to be expected when facing a master of ghost-types. Even with the transformations pokémon had gone through, gengar did not look too different from its original form. It just now had a more defined torso and longer limbs to look human. It now had a neck while the huge head sort of resembled what its whole body used to look like.

"We have this Nidorino!" I shouted. "Get ready for horn drill!"

Nidorino bowed his head, ready to aim his horn straight into the chest of the gengar. The ghost pokémon reared back with its right fist as black energy whirled around it.

"Look out, Nidorino! Dodge it and charge in for the kill!" I cried out.

Nidorino surged forward. The gengar threw its punch and a shadowed fist jutted out for Nidorino. Somehow, the shadow punch that was locked onto my pokémon passed right by him as Nidorino sidestepped it mid charge. The shadow energy went straight for the crowd but dissipated when it hit the invisible dome around the arena. Nidorino leaped at gengar, aimed his horn at the ghost, and-

The familiar beeps of my alarm clock jolted me awake. I shut the device off and rubbed my eyes. I briefly thought about lying back down, pulling the covers over my shoulders, and returning to my pokémon dreams, but a greater desire welled up within me. Today, my dreams could become a reality. I threw off the blankets and leapt to my feet.

Outside my bedroom window, the flat expanses of Pallet Town stretched for miles. Pallet Town contained very few homes, easily less than one hundred, maybe even less than fifty, but many of those homes were farms, especially nearer to the outskirts of town. The vast fields allowed this farming community to seem bigger than it really was. Large, forested hills and mountains surrounded my hometown, making it a lovely little valley. My eyes scanned past to the west most section of Pallet down. Just across the river that cut through the western half, a hill jutted higher than any of the rolling hills in town. Perched at the very top of that hill sat Professor Oak's lab. Today, I would receive my starter pokémon!
