The sun was bright, and soon it was almost time for the flowers to start blooming. The park was soon a riot of color, blending together like a painters' pallet. An eager little girl sat on the swings waiting for someone to join her. While she waited for her friend, she looked up at the red house on the hill. 'I'll own that one day.' She thought to herself.  Hours went by and nothing happened. No one came.

"Kiyoko-chan?"

Naomi woke with a startle. Outside a terrible storm was raging and the thunder had woken her. She had just gotten off a double shift and just wanted to sleep. As if the day couldn't get any worse, the doorbell started ringing. Dragging herself out of bed Naomi stood up; groaning as she did so. She flinched as her feet come in contact with the cold floor. Like a cold winter's night, the wooden floor bit at her like a snake. Sharp and piercing. It sent pins and needles up her legs. Her toes were so cold they hurt. Naomi did her best to ignore the pain as she walked downstairs. On the stairs was a sleeping fluffy black cat. Naomi stopped to pet Zora who started purring immediately. Her happiness was squinched as the doorbell rang. The door at the bottom of the stairs stared blankly at her. She contemplated whether to answer it. She was about to descend once again, but her phone buzzed, so she took it out to see who'd message her at such an ungodly time.

Zora bolted as Naomi Stomped down the rest of the stairs. She quickly unbolted the front door and threw it open. Standing there in a black suit and matching fedora was none other than a soaking wet Sam. A goofy-looking smile plastered on their face. It was the same smile she would have received after Herr Oberlander would call her out for not paying attention.

"Naomi!" She looked up to see her shaggy-haired teacher staring at her. The rest of the class quickly turned their attention on her too. She turned a bright red as realized once again she had been daydreaming about the red house on a hill. She stood up abruptly knocking over her chair. The whole class started laughing as turned around to see the chair on the floor. She looked at her desk partner only to find Sam smiling. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, extending their gaze and reaching into the depths of her soul. It was the tender and pure innocence of youth so vibrant and free.

"Go stand in the hall for the remainder of the period."  It was a common punishment and one Naomi had received often. She fixed her chair and went out into the hall. The bottom third of the wall was painted silver-gray, while the top two-thirds were painted white. It was beautiful and cleanly painted. The students were in charge of cleaning the school after the final bell rang. They knew better than to do a lousy job and by how white the walls still were, they did a good job. For almost twenty minutes she stood by the classroom door listen to Herr Oberlander explain the philosophy of Atticus a 175 AD philosopher. They then started talking about other philosophers and the one quote that caught her attention was,

"If you cannot catch a fish, do not blame the sea." Though she didn't hear who had said it. It called to her. When the bell rang and the class started emptying, Naomi went back inside. It was break time and most of the students were going to go down the hall to get snacks or even outside to get some sunlight. One of the few people left in the classroom was Sam. Still smiling that same goofy smile, they sat back and relaxed. Her day was illumed by those amber eyes, all the while shaking her head at the silver-haired person still waiting for her to sit down. That lighthearted, goofy smile ever-present.
