Everything was bright and sunny when my last day of treatment had finally come. Nurses were of their upbeat and optimistic countenance when they started to detach all the tubes and necessary hoses from my body.
Everybody was clapping their hands, welcoming each and one of the first few survivors of the virus.
Doctors were extending their multitude of greetings and felicitations toward me. I stifled a hard-earned smile.
Would we look like them as well when we grow up?
Would we look as passionate as them after getting that long title?
I gripped the lower hem of my shirt, feeling all the dawn of emotions. It was an excruciating month of treatment – something I wouldn't forget my entire life. It was a nightmare that would forever haunt me in my sleep.
Yet it was a month of realizations – how life could be so wonderful, muddled, and short. I wouldn't have gone through this nightmare if not for one who has stayed by my side all the time like a sun continuously shedding its light into the vast green grass fields.
My anchor. My rock. But like the sun, it sets, falters, fades, hides, and descends.
I put up my bravest smile upon reaching the exit of my home after almost a month. With you, I was the bravest. With you, I was the boldest.
A tear from my eye fell. Was everything worth it, Laurent? What would you tell me now? Were you proud of me?
Winning the battle surely had high regards–but losing you? Losing you was...hard.
And just like that, I'm coming home, alone, with nothing but the memories of our past, Laurent. I have loved you enough to let you go in this lifetime.
