That damn Donna Reed
Luke and Lorelai are discussing paint colors for the diner, their drinking, chatting and having a nice time, but the evening takes a sudden unexpected turn.
☆
"You ready to talk paint?" Lorelai asks, excited about her choices.
"No" Luke says frankly.
"Good" Lorelai ignoring his dull response continues, "I've got all the choices set up and while any one of them would work, I think this combo is currently my favorite" she goes over to the other side of the diner where the paint samples hung on the wall, "huh" Luke stands next to her.
"See, Imagine" Lorelai gestures around "This will be for the walls and this will be for the trim -- the, like, edging around the doors and the windows"
"I know what the trim is" Luke says shooting her a look.
"OK" Lorelai goes back to the samples "The colors are actually quite similar to what you have here now, but they're just a little richer, a little warmer, what do you think?" She asks.
"Well" he sighs unsure.
"Wait, wait, wait" Lorelai gets an idea, running to the light switch she dims them "a little ambiance".
"This is a diner" Luke says as she walks back "We don't do ambiance".
"All right" she says brushing it off "One argument at a time" she casually leans with the crook of her arm on his shoulder, "So what do you think?".
"Honestly?".
"Yep".
He looks at her "I have no idea. You like it?".
Lorelai smiles "Yeah", to which Luke smiles too "ok".
"Good" Lorelai removes her arm and claps her hands together in anticipation just as the diner door bursts open and there's a bunch of flashes and clicks of a camera as Andrew starts taking pictures.
Luke spins around "What are you doing?!".
He lowers the camera "Oh -- um, the town council wanted to do a before and after poster"
"Out!" Luke marches towards the door and Andrew gets the message, quickly rushing out "bye".
Luke flips the sign to "Closed" and locks the door, "That's it. We're closed for the night".
Lorelai goes and sits down at the counter "You know, listen -- since you have to take everything off the walls to decide what stuff you're going to keep and what stuff you're to get rid of...".
"Everything stays" Luke states stubbornly.
"OK, there's a plastic dancing pork chop that says.." she continues, lost in her own crazy thoughts.
"Everything stays" Luke repeats.
"I lost my head over a good chop. You should too".
"Everything. Stays".
She knew there was no arguing the matter, he didn't budge that easily, "Ok" she raises her hands in surrender "Everything stays".
Luke gets a thoughtful look on his face "You know, this place hasn't been painted since my dad was alive".
"No, I didn't know that" Lorelai says.
"He painted it before he opened it and once more when the roof caved in one winter. I think that's probably it", Lorelai smiles briefly, he was always so grumpy and drawn in to himself, it was nice having little moments like these when he'd open up to her, about his life or anything for that matter "The paint lasted a long time. He got his money's worth".
