Their burden

»»————- ————-««

Y/n woke up with a start as Levi kicked her foot.

"Wake up, brat."

Her wide doe eyes slowly opened to meet his dark gaze as he was leaning over her, holding himself with a hand on the wall.

"Levi ?" she mumbled, her mind still clouded by the deep slumber she had been in. She didn't understand where she was. She touched the back of her head which was oddly hurting.

"It's Captain Levi for you." he spat out.

She fully opened her eyes. At last, she was able to gaze upon him once more.

"Levi, I -"

"Are you stupid ?" he asked in a flat tone. He pushed himself off the wall and dragged a chair from the center of the room to sit in front of her, crossing his arms on his chest. "Do you understand how bad this ?"

Y/n looked away, her lips quivering. All this time she worked hard to be worthy of his praise, all this time she trained harder than anybody to make him proud of her, at least once. At the end, all she managed was to screw up on the day of his return. She clicked her tongue, her frustration eating her alive.

"I wish you never came here." the Captain let out in a sigh.

Those simple words were enough for Y/n to feel a sharp pain piercing her chest. She respected him the most, he had been her whole universe in the most critical period of her life. She felt her world shatter at his unexpected harsh words.

Levi frowned at the sight of her shifting expression. She ground her teeth and her head slumped down.

Did I say something bad ? he thought.

His eyebrow twitched when he saw her trembling chin.

"You better not cr--"

"I'm not." Y/n interrupted abruptly. Her darting eyes landed upon him, making his whole body tense up. He had a hard time coming to the realisation that the frail child he knew so long ago grew into the woman in front of him. Levi let himself get distracted by the sight of her. He looked her up and down, his eyes lingered on the strand of hair on her wet lips. His hand slightly twitched at the thought of brushing it off.

"Have I always been a burden to you ?" Y/n uttered in a chocked voice.

"Yes." Levi retorted before he even processed what she had said. He immediately regretted his hasty answer as Y/n lowered her head once again with a vacant look.

He let out a forceful exhale from his nose as he stood up in an abrupt motion, making the chair squeal.
He got out of the cold concrete room slamming the door shut behind him. He took a deep breath leaning against the closed door.

"Shit." he breathed as covered his face with his hand.

"Why the long face ?" interrogated a woman walking up to him.

"Don't pry, Hange." Levi dismissed her with a cold look. "Is Erwin in his office?"

She tilted her head, pressing her lips in curiosity. It wasn't common for her to see him behaving so oddly.

"Mh yeah, I came to fetch ya." she said with a bright face.

He nodded and left her sight with assertive steps, not bother waiting on her.

Hange glared at him and then at the door, waiting for him to be fully out of sight before sneaking in the room with a playful smirk on her face.

She laid her eyes on the girl sitting on the ground. Y/n hadn't budged since Levi left her with only the echoes of his razor sharp words. She shifted her eyes ever so slowly at Hange when she heard the door creaking.
