APRIL
Admission to UA High was competitive just like every other year, almost one to three-hundred. Four on recommendation, I being the first. Walking through the halls wondering till my eyes landed on the door for Class 1-A. The classes already had students sitting and waiting for the next instruction. A small piece of white paper laid on the front desk with our seating assignments on it.
Seat 15.
I made my way to the back wall to take my seat. A girl I recognized from the entrance exam was already seated looking at me.
"Oh! It's you, from the exam! I must say watching you was breathtaking. Clearly, someone to be matched. I'm Momo Yaoyorozu." She gave a slight wave to me as I took my seat. It would be rude to say nothing back.
"Shoto Todoroki."
"Nice to meet you Todoroki. Hey lucky us! We were the two recommendations in Class 1-A this year. They had to make extra room just for us." She spoke in an excited manner. More people started to fill the room, booming with personalities. "How did they make room when there are still empty seats left," I stated. Yaoyorozu turned her body to look at the room filled with a couple of empty seats down the row from us. The commotion died down once the door swung open again to see a young boy with green hair standing in its frame.
"It's him."
The tall demanding boy spoke from another student's desk. The green-haired boy stood there wide eyed, visibly shaken at the sudden attention. With a shaken breath he blurted out his greetings as the tall bot strutted his way over to him.
"Good morning! My name is Tenya Iida", his track quickly cut short from the boy's confirmation. "I'm Izuku Midoriya" He green-haired boy nervously spoke. The two boys began to converse about the entrance exam. Iida giving him high regards for his actions during it. "How different do you think their exam was?" Yaoyorozu spoke.
I shrug was all I mustered in her direction, trying to listen to the whispers around me. I watched around the room and people began their own conversations again. One boy had his eyes focused on Midoriya. Watching with a scowl at the boy was greeted with welcomes.
Everyone came to their seats as the teacher walked in, "Hello, I'm Shota Aizawa. Your teacher." His hair pushed messy around his face to cover his tired eyes. Didn't seem to be the type to be a teacher. "Alright, let's get to it. Put these on and head outside." We had a blue with the white stripes uniform he pulled from his sleeping bag and he turned to walk out of the classroom. As we walked to the locker rooms we separated into our rooms to find our uniforms to be folded neatly in our personal locker. Small chatter filled the room as changed and headed out the door. Walking to a big open field. Watching the sky as I waited for students to join me. As we all arrived the task had been handed to us.
"What?", mumbles floated around the students, "a Quirk assessment test?" Everyone proclaimed.
So we're jumping right into this huh?
"Bakugo, you managed to get the most points on the entrance exam. What was your farthest distance throw with a softball when you were in Junior High?"
The blond boy with the scowl spoke in front of me. Bakugo. "Sixty-seven meters, I think."
First huh? Must have an extreme Quirk to come in first then. Lucky for him, I came in first too.
"Try doing it with your Quirk," Aizawa said. Bakugo made his way to the mound as Aizawa explained how the distance would be tracked.
How does throwing a softball show our Quirks? We all clearly have different abilities how can this measure us?
"Anything goes just stay in the circle." He pushed on.
Bakugo stretched as he made his position posing out a threat as he did before he made his calculated throw. Fire ringing around the ball as it soared through the sky.
"DIE!" Echoed as we watched the dust settle around him.
A fire quirk? He's like me. No, he can't be. When he threw the softball a loud crack could be heard as it left his hand. Something is powering that fire, not just pure flames alone.
Mutters could be heard slipping from each classmate. The intensity from this kid would be hard to match.
"All of you need to know your maximum capabilities. It's the most rational way of figuring out your potential as a pro hero." Aizawa spoke cooling as he lifted his phone to show a distance of 705.2 meters. Many students gasped as the large number, thinking of ways to beat such a good start.
The full task was explained. Eight tries's to show you worth and if you're at the bottom, you're out. Simple, I wasn't worried. I felt no need to boast or show off. Coming in first in the recommendation test shows I have a spot here. Now was just my chance to show everyone that. Many students began to show their disagreement on sending someone home. It's only fair, not be fair.
"Show me it's not a mistake that you're here."
With pleasure.
Looks of determination spread across the students as we ready ourselves for the games ahead. The eight tests were designed to show all of our strengths and weaknesses. Meter dash, students with speed had their chance to shine. After a few rounds, Midoriya and Bakugo started at the line. Bakugo flying himself to the finish line. Explosions. It's not fire, it's explosions. Interesting. As the tests went off we all got our time to shine. Slowly making my way around the classmates to see how everyone was performing. Some stood out, others not so much but all around everyone did better than average. Seeing who will go home will be a close call.
There seemed to be some tension between Bakugo and Midoriya as Midoriya stepped up to the ball throw. "Did you hear about what he did at the entrance exam?" Iida asked. "Huh? Bakugo fired back in a cocky tone. Blocking them out I focused on Midoriya, the tension rising among the students. He hasn't been a shiner all day so what will make him special now? What did he do for people to keep an eye on him? As he set himself up for the throw it seemed ordinary till a bright pink light shed from his finger as the ball pushed from the tip of his finger flying a long distance. Leaving himself a broken purple finger. All that build-up for that.
What's this kid's deal? Clearly, he has a power he can't even control. He is one to watch.
As score reports lit up the screen I found my name in the number two spot. Yaoyorozu coming in first. "Wow, Todoroki look at us. Guess we are living up to our expectations!" She exclaimed as laid her hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, I guess so." If I was going to come in second it was at least to Yaoyorozu. "You had some pretty intense focus there Todoroki. You've seen to have honed in your Quirk. That ice is a nice one to have." She added. I only nodded at her for a response. "Good thing no one is going home!" Many of the students said in their excitement.
"Hey, that ice was something else!" A voice came from behind me. A boy with red hair sharpened to a tip marched to me. "Must take a lot of power to control it that wicked like. I'm Kirishima, Todoroki is it?" He said with a giant smile, his eyes looking between Yaoyorozu and I. "I've worked hard," I answered him. The boy seemed nice but I didn't know what to say. "Alright! You'll have to share your secrets with me one day." He laughed. "There is no secret to it," I stated. "Todoroki I think he was meaning your drive. Not physical secrets." Yaoyorozu starched the back of her head, "I understand now." Kirishima let out a nervous laugh. "Alright, I'll see you guys around. Good work today." He gave a thumbs-up as he ran around to another student. Many of the girls began to make their way to the locker room again.
"Hey their ladies, anybody need help to unzip?" The little purple boy said. Before he could take another step the young frog as girl launched him in the air with her tongue. "Mineta." She said with a scowl. She turned around and gave me a small smile. "Call me Tsu", she placed her hand on her chest, "Todoroki".
"You had a lot of admires today. You're gonna be heavy competition with a Quirk like that." She said as she walked along with me to the locker rooms. Looking back I see a tempered blond boy looking my way. We changed back into our school uniforms and made my way back to the main building and to my locker to grab all my belongings before I left for home. I watched as my fellow classmates gathered their things from their lockers as they scattered out here and there. The first day at UA High wasn't bad, clearly, there is a harsh line between who are the front runners in our class.
