The evening had spoiled fairly quickly thanks to that little conniving Slytherin roach Pansy Parkinson, and Hermione and Ron were the first couple to make a formal exit. That doesn't go to say they were the first to leave, but after Astoria left Theo, Draco, and Pansy disappeared as well. Ron had whispered in her ear and asked her if she'd like to go back to the common room while everyone was still dancing, so they said their goodnights to Harry, Ginny, Luna and Rolf.

Together they roamed down the halls, hands intertwined while Ron carried her heels in his free hand. She was wrapped in his coat jacket warming her body as the cool tile against her feet kept her wide awake, and they said nothing as they walked to the Gryffindor common room, comfortable in each other's silence. They'd been best friends since she was eleven years old, they knew each other inside out, and never felt the need to make useless conversation to fill the air between them, but rather enjoyed the other's presence. They turned a corner and found themselves in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady.

"Conversus autem folium." Hermione whispered to the Lady as the portrait door swung open and they stepped into the empty common room. She shed the coat jacket and threw herself onto the sofa beside Ron leaning her head on his chest. He flicked his wand to the fireplace and it crackled with life. There was no sound coming from any of the dormitories, meaning everyone must still be at the dance, which was fine with her, she'd cherish any time she had with Ron that she wouldn't have to share with anyone else. He had his arm around her, holding her to his chest as he stroked her arm with his thumb, and she wished they could stay like that forever. Moments like those, the small ones she had with Ron, meant more to her than she could have ever fathomed. It was more than a feeling of safety and security with Ron, he felt like home.

"I've missed this." He spoke softly, giving her arm a small squeeze of reassurance. "Holding you, roaming the castle, hanging out in the common room."

She smiled and looked up at him. "I'm glad you could come tonight, it was absolutely perfect. Even with all the Pansy drama."

"Yeah, what was her problem anyway?"

"I'm not sure exactly. I mean, of course she's always hated anyone who isn't Slytherin, but she seems to particularly despise Astoria. Which is odd, considering she's a Slytherin, a pureblood at that."

"Oh yeah, when did that happen too? I was a little surprised to meet your new friends." He asked, as she sat up to look at each other face to face. "Not that I'm saying it's bad, just curious." he quickly added.

She shrugged. "I'm not sure exactly. We're partners in Potions, but tonight was our first time truly hanging out outside of class. She's actually a very nice person to be around, none of that haughty 'I'm better than everyone' nonsense you might see with most other Slytherins. She's quite funny too."
