"Stevie why do we need this many newspapers?"

  "Because Viv they are useful."

"That's the worst explanation I've ever heard, Steven."

Steve, Vivian's younger brother continued to talk about newspapers and why he needs to put them in his shoes. She tuned out most of her brother's nonsense and they continued to walk back to their home holding huge stacks of newspapers.

Vivian was home because she just finished a few classes and had a week off of classes at Brooklyn College till her next classes started.

Once they were back into their family's small apartment they went into their room and threw all the newspapers on Steve's bunk bed.

Next, Vivian ran into the kitchen to see what their mother was making for supper.

Her mother, Sarah Rogers worked at a local hospital in the TB ward.

"Vivian Isabel, please help me make supper," she rudely demanded.

"Of course Mother. But do know the last time I tried to make supper I almost burned the house down?"

This was correct. The last time Vivian tried to make a cake for Steve's birthday. She overcooked the cake and almost set the whole house on fire. Thanks to Steve the house was fine because he used the fire extinguisher the was in the pantry. Before the fire was too big.

Vivian looked at the burn marks on the stove with embarrassment.

"Vivian, please just make supper I don't feel to well."

It happened all too suddenly. Their mother had fallen onto the ground and passed out. Vivian yelled frantically for Steve to call 911.

Steve rushed to the phone and dialed the number and started yelling into the machine informing the person on the other end of the line what happened to their mother.

Vivian sat on the ground next to her mother, Sarah Rogers. She sobbed and pleaded to her unconscious mother to be alright.

After what felt like forever an ambulance came and took their mother and Vivian and Steve just ran slowly after it.
