Have you ever wondered what would happen in a zombie apocalypse? Ever wonder what would cause it? How about, how many survivors? What about, how would you survive? Where you would live? What you would eat? Who to trust? Who not to trust? Could you kill people? Ones who were going to change as soon as they died? Could you fight for supplies that could keep you alive? How about, protecting your family and friends? Where would you go? How would you get weapons?
These questions are ones I know dearly. I haven't had to wonder what my answers would be, because I survived the zombie apocalypse. I know I must sound completely crazy, but it's true. About two years or so ago, a scientist was doing an excitement with the genetic code and had created a new strain that was said to keep people alive longer before death. He used it on his volunteers and sent them on their way. A few days later these people turned and attacked those around them, creating more people like them. You see a zombies bite has venom. Venom that carries a characteristic that forces the change on the person bit. Once changed the zombies are full on hungry. They want blood. Blood of anything living really. But that's off topic. The infection of the zombies spread fast and large. It spread fast and if there were survivors they had to be resourceful. The zombies moved across the countries and even the oceans. They spread faster than the plague and some other deadly diseases I can't name. Some of us survived. Survived the spread. Survived the looting. Survived the attacks from other surviving pack. Survived the running. Survived the wounds from battle. Not many of us survived though. It will be our mission to populate the world. That will take time.
So you see it's harder than it looks. Let me explain more about the zombies. They don't remember who they were before the change. They don't even remember how to talk or anything. They shuffle around looking for their next meal and when it comes along they attack. Zombies are not this big idea that would be great, as some of us were thinking before the spread. It's not often that what people think will never happen does happen. Zombies will eat anything, though the largely prefer humans. Zombies can see and hear just like then could before. Noise attracts them. Smell of dead anything repels them. The smell of their own kind can truck them into believing they are among their own. It's dangerous to cover yourself in their blood or anything because if their blood or drool manage to get into you somehow you will turn. I have seen a turn and it's not easy or breezy for the person turning. It's like watching someone with cancer finally give into it. The change starts with a fever. Then moves onto dreams and body aches. The change finally take full effect as soon as the persons heart stops. Once that happens their brain recognizes that they have this altered genetic code and initiates the change. They loose their coloring, they turn gray. Their legs don't work as well as they did before, and they become hungry. Ever so hungry. It's nothing to be wondering about. Nothing like this is fun.
Before all of this happened, I was just a normal eighteen year old waiting to graduate. I had a family and lots of friends. I was normal. My friends had these zombie games where you had to kill the zombies before they killed you. That's nothing like real life. But those games were fun. I used what I knew from the games to help me. Before the spread everyone thought that the zombie apocalypse would never happen. Believe me I wish it hadn't. The loss that you feel when someone close to you changes and you have to kill them, is terrible. It's not fun. You can believe you will kill them without hesitation but when it comes to actually doing it you will hesitate, you will try and wait it out to see if they do change, you will cry, and you will definitely stall long enough to get a first glance at their zombie self. It's not fun or easy. It's scary as hell and your survival is the most important thing out there. Zombies aren't anything to play around with or underestimate. They are smarter that we gave them credit for. They can climb, well short things anyway. They can pull things apart, wood, doors anything really. But the thing that makes them the smartest, is they track with their noses. Yes like the police dogs and such. I am telling you this because it's not all fun and games. Running from shelter to shelter, killing people, hunting for food, being attached by other survivors, finding out that the cute came too late. Everything you know changes and suddenly you are in a what if kind of life. What if I don't get food? What if I don't give my guns to them? What if she doesn't change? What if we camp here? What if I run out of ammo? What if we get attacked? What if I cut my arm or leg off? What if we get overrun? These kind of questions ran through my head daily. I had a group with me. People who I trusted and they deserved to be trusted. But if I could change one thing about what I did those two years ago, I would change how I handled the people changing in our group. I wouldn't have killed them in front of the others and I wouldn't have left them behind. Who am I referring to? My family. My mother and sister. My best friend and her brother. I wouldn't have left them behind that day. I would have gone with my guy and moved on instead of looting for supplies. Had I moved on... Things would have happened differently. The point is, I know what being in the zombie apocalypse is like. It's not like the video games or movies you see on television. It's not like the comic booms you read or the fiction stories you read. It's a horrible, terrifying ordeal to go through. You don't come out of it like you went in. Even the survivors didn't come out the same. I didn't come out the same. No one comes out the same. I am telling you this because I want you to know that because it happened once, it can happen again. Us survivors are afraid to try and populate the world again for fear that it didn't really go away. There are ways we can protect ourselves from this. We monitor anyone who comes and goes from us. We track their movements. As well as where they go or what they do. Like I said you change after something like this happen. It's not normal to come our like nothing happened. You see and hear and feel things you wish you hadn't. Nothing is like it used to be. Nothing. I still pull my gun out when I have to go inside a building. If someone comes up behind me, I pull my gun. I sleep with it in my hand. I wear it daily, for fear that I am just imagining the cute and our survival. It's harder to move on and rebuild your life after a year and a half of running fighting, killing, and hiding.
Please if you take anything from what I just told you, please don't let anyone test their theories about prolonging life. Don't let anyone volunteer for the testing and don't let the leave if they succeed. It will do us all a favor and keep you all alive. I promise I have not lied to you. I promise that my stories are true...
You want to hear my story of survival? Before I get into it, I must state that, you need to remember that I did what I had to do for survival. I wanted to survive so I did what was needed of me to ensure I survived another day.
