All I've ever known is the area within these walls. It seems never ending in my village, as if we have plentiful space to explore. That is, until you go a little too far. Until you look a little too high up, past the buildings and see walls. 50 meter walls to be exact. Walls that trap it's prey within a jail and leave the curious to create a world outside of them.
"Y/N!" I shake my head as Clara calls me out of my trance. Silly daydreams will never get me anywhere.
"Hi Clara, did you finish your chores for the day?" I smile at her and continue dusting off the window panes. I finish then move on to the floors.
It was warm for being a spring morning but I only had the floors left for my chores. I grab a bucket and sponge and begin to scrub the floors. I wave Clara away so that she doesn't hurt herself. She was giddy and couldn't have been more excited to leave our house for the moment.
"I'll be headed to Eren and Mikasa's home! You know, to allow time for the floors to dry." She winks at me and runs out the front door, not even bothering to close it. I grunt in annoyance as I have to get up to close the doors. Just what I needed in the house is disgusting bugs and dirt brought in from the wind.
Shortly, maybe about an hour, I finish the floors of our tiny room. Not many Shingashia homes were big but the wood floors caught a lot of dust that melted into the cracks. I wipe the sweat off my forehead and decide to go into town to see what the market stalls had to offer. I count the money I have and decide to make a simple stew. I take my hooded jacket and leave for town.
I stop by the few vegetable stalls to pick through the produce available. As I reach for the cabbage, my hand bumps into a larger male's. I gasp, worried I might've offended him.
"Excuse me, I didn't mean to hit your hand. I didn't notice you were reaching for it" I turn to the man and now my head in apology. The tall blond man looked slightly down to me. He looks uncomfortable as if he wasn't supposed to be here. I make eye contact for a slight second before I turn back to the stand, embarrassed.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry for not paying attention. You see I was rushing because I have to be home soon. I was trying to get dinner before my family came home from the fields." The stranger gave me a gentle smile and paid for the cabbage that sparked our talk. He handed it to me and walked off with another in his hand. I blinked and he seemed to disappear into the growing crowds. Those hazel eyes felt empty but kind and I knew I wouldn't forget them.
I shook my head, interrupting my thoughts about the blond stranger. I had to get the rest of the ingredients for my soup. I wanted to have everything ready for Clara when she came home. Eren was constantly getting into fights and causing Mikasa and Clara to bail him out. That boy had such a temper problem. I felt so bad for his poor mother. She definitely had her work cut out for her to raise that special little boy. I smiled and finish the rest of my shopping.
I stop by the Yaeger household to pick up Clara and let her know that I would finish dinner in less than an hour. I had to make sure she came home at least before the sun started to set. I couldn't let her get lost in the dark, not that I thought she would since she has memorized the path between the two houses. I was just worried about my dear sister and the thought of her getting hurt was not pleasant.
We weren't that far apart in our age gap. While she was a young 11, I was 13 going on 14. I was expected to be the caregiver for her since our mother died 4 years ago. Clara was so young and it was such a sudden death. I knew my father was heartbroken to this day. I could see that's why he was never home and pushed himself in his work. He always stayed so late in his office as he was the most popular tailor in our village. Most were poor and could only barter with small items like toys or food but my father had a kind heart and occasionally would work overtime for free. By occasionally I mean he would do it often.
I knock on the Yaeger's door but to my surprise it was quiet inside. I knock again and this time I hear movement. Curiously I open the door.
"Miss Yaeger? Eren, Mikasa? Claraaaa?" I called out. There were candles lowly lit and it smelled like a fresh pot of tea had been made. Warm, possibly apple cider even? Out of nowhere someone jumps on my back and I let out a loud scream, dropping my groceries on the floor. Then an outburst of laughter occurred.
"We got you Y/N! Haha, you should've seen the look on your face!" Clara slowly stopped laughing as she got off my back. Eren came out of his hiding spot with his hand over his mouth and his face red. Mikasa sat up from the dusty couch in the living room, yawning. I gathered the three of them together and rolled my eyes.
"You brats! I can't believe you scared me." I scolded them and grabbed Eren's ear. I know he was the instigator and my snotty little sister came up with the plan. Honestly I was sure that Mikasa wasn't involved but regardless I was mad.
"Clara I'll see you at home. I only came by to tell you that dinner would be ready shortly. I expect you to be home before sunset and after this little prank of yours I wouldn't disregard my order. Now come hand me the potatoes that rolled over there. I've pretty much collected everything else you caused me to drop." Clara gives me an adorable pout and jumps away, handing me the run away potato. She waves me goodbye for now and Eren pulls her towards his room and envious Mikasa following.
After preparing our dinner for the night and setting the table, I sit to stare out our window. The sun had started to set and the sky turned a beautiful orange-red. Slowly I watched it turn purple, blue, to dark night. I signed as I realized Clara the brat would be late until I hear the front door open. I jump up and straighten my apron. I told her she would be in trouble if she didn't listen. Only it turned out to be my father and Clara in tow. I gently smiled. Finally, I thought, a delicious dinner with my family.
"And then we scared Y/N so much she screamed Papa! It was glorious! Eren thought it was my best prank everrrr!" Clara giggled and jumped on the chair, savaging eating her stew. My father only laughed and messed up her hair.
"My sweet Clara, little girl, you are quite the handful. Can you play nice every once in a while? I'm sure Y/N deserves a break." He locks eyes with me and we both sit down. I smile at him tap my spoon with his then dig into my supper. After a thankfully silent dinner, he gathers the dishes and begins to clean them off. Both Clara and I give him a kiss on the cheek goodnight and head toward our shared room. I tuck Clara in and blow out the candle in our bed side shelf. Somehow, I still couldn't get that stranger out of my head. His height, hazel eyes, and handsome face seemed to own real estate in my brain.
