I woke up the next morning tucked under the covers, and the shoes that were on my feet when I fell asleep were gone. Over on my desk next to my untouched herbology homework was my plate from last night, and it was still hot. I opened up the slip of parchment that had been left next to it.
"I charmed your food it to keep it warm," it read. "You fell asleep in your shoes, I took them off so you might sleep better -L" I smile at it. I hear Evie get out of bed and I hastily crumble the note in my fist.
"What's that?" she asks, walking up behind me.
"I fell asleep after dinner last night and my friend brought my plate up. Put a spell on it to keep it hot," I respond.
"Cute," she replies, her voice laced with sarcasm. I make a face with my back turned to her. She walks away to the bathroom and I remembered that today was Sunday, and I had to send Milo out with Evie and I's letters for mum. I grabbed his leather pouch and tied it around his neck with our letters already inside, and Luna suddenly came running in the door.
"Oh, good. You didn't send him out yet," she says, walking up to me. "My dad's owl is older than I am and I'm not sure where she's been the past few weeks, so is it okay if I send my letters home with Milo?"
"Of course," I say. "I'm sure he won't mind." Luna reaches to put her envelopes in his pouch, and he nips at her hand. She flinches away from him.
"Milo! Not nice," I hiss at him and turn to Luna. "Sorry, I should have told you that he usually expects something in return for delivering your mail," I said. She just shakes her head and smiles.
"That's okay, what does he like?" she asks, searching her pockets.
"Food, head scratches," I reply. "If you've got something shiny he'll love you forever." Luna's face lights up and she takes a small, reddish-gold coin out of her pocket and gingerly extends it to Milo. At the sight of it, he chirps happily and picks it out of her open palm with his beak, and drops it into his cage to play with later.
"What is that?" I ask her, examining the coin at the bottom of Milo's cage.
"Rory gave it to me," she said, putting her mail in Milo's pouch. "It's an American muggle coin, he says it's called a penny. He told me he's got plenty more, too. All kinds of muggle currency, from everywhere in the whole world. He and his father collect them." She opens the window, watches Milo fly away, and shuts it behind him. "Did you know muggles print money on paper, with people's faces on them? How strange," she continued.
"I never understood it either," I admit. "With paper money it's damaged too easily. At least coins don't rip in half."
"I agree," she said, sitting on my bed. "So, did you have any plans for today?"
"Not really," I answer with a shrug. I gesture to the textbooks stacked on one side of my desk. "I've still got a boatload of herbology homework to do, and it's been a while since I've had time to catch up." She nods in understanding.
"I've got a lot of charms homework to do too. Shall we do it together?"
"Sure," I say. She smiles and runs back to her room to get her homework. I haul all my herbology stuff onto my bed and clear off the rest of the desk. Luna comes back in a minute later with books stacked in her arms and her wand stuck behind her ear. I smile, knowing she got that from me.
"Can I sit at the desk?" she asks, holding the top of the stack in place with her chin. I take a few books off the top and lead her over to the desk to put them down.
"Don't blow anything to bits, you hear?" I said, pretending to be stern. She laughs at me.
"I'll try not to," she replies. I fall down on my bed and start on my herbology. We both work in silence until the bathroom door opens and we both jump. I'd forgotten Evie was in there. Her made-up face was twisted with either surprise or disgust at the sight of Luna.
