Yamaguchi wasn't very found of high school or waking up early either, If it were up to him he would be homeschooled. Yamaguchi had his problems, with the people that went to the school, specifically his classmates.
Yamaguchi was in the as they say the smart class, so his classmates were little know it all's, so they wouldn't really talk to him rather than talk about him behind Yamguchi's back. They were targeting Yamaguchi because they thought he was a pushover, Yamaguchi put up that front so then they wouldn't get any weird ideas about him. Yamaguchi can fend for himself, but he's still the shy and reserved kid from when he was little.
Yamaguchi only had one friend in his classroom and that was Tsukkishima Kei, they lived in the same neighborhood so they were childhood friends, Yamaguchi took a liking to Tsukkishima the first time they met, apparently so did Tsukkishima because now their best friend's.
