"Come on Bell's live a little it will be fun!"
I looked at Mary and then back down at the river beneath us.
"I don't know Mary. We should not do this you know about the rules."
Mary always liked to break rules, father had told me I needed to stay away from her but something inside me wanted to disobey and follow her.
"Rules! They are silly and I have done this before. We will be fine so come on join me up here and lets go."
Her hand looked so inviting and I could feel deep inside me I really wanted to do it, but if father would find out.
It would not be worth the punishment. I felt a shiver go up my spine and started to shake my head.
"I'm sorry Mary but I can't, I should not even be here with you. I should go before someone sees us and tells my father."
I was scared of him, he was a kind man when you obeyed but if you broke the rules he would punish you and he was not kind then.
"Fine, go run away and be the good girl and obey. I choose to live! When you find the strength to join me come find me again."
Then she jumped and I stopped breathing. I raced to the edge and tried to find her, she never came back up.
I was frantically searching for her and calling her name. People started to notice and came up to me trying to calm me down.
A woman embraced me and rubbed my back, I had not even noticed I was crying.
"Dear child calm down, tell me what happened?" She sounded so kind and gentle like my mother, like all the woman who lived in our community.
"I was here and Mary wanted to jump of the bridge and asked me to join and I said no, I wanted to follow the rules and she decided to jump, she did and she never came back up."
The man surrounding us started to look for her and called our her name. I felt horrible for letting my friend do this to herself. She wanted to live, be free and break rules, if that was the kind of life you got from disobeying I was even more scared to ever try. They were right when they said you would be punished if you broke the rules.
Strong and familiar arms wrapped around my small frame and the familiar woodsy sent calmed me down.
"My dearest Annabell, this is why I asked you to not be around her. This is why we have rules and we obey, if we don't you see what happens. We should go and let the man do their work and get you home."
He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and I felt fear grow inside me. He was holding me to tight and I knew he was holding in his anger, I disobeyed so I was to be punished.
"Thank you for helping my Annabell, I will make sure she will come by to help you in return miss Green."
Miss Green kindly nodded her head without looking him in the eye.
That was another rule, never look the man in the eye unless they give you permission.
The woman are submissive to the man and are to follow his lead and rules.
He said his well wishes and then we went to our house.
I was walking behind him like I was suppose to do. Only awsnered his questions when he spoke to me, like I was tought.
Every step closer to our house made my feet grow heavier. I knew what was waiting for me on the other side of that door and even though I knew I broke his rule, I did not believe I deserved it.
