My name is Mae, and this is my story. My mom has been a nurse for as long as I can remember, and my dad was a stay at home dad. We always had the best fun, we would play Barbie's, cars, and we even had picnic's by the lake. On my fifth birthday, my dad, Joe, forgot to get my birthday cake, so my mom, Carmon, made him go out and pick it up.
I remember sitting in the living room as my mom was doing my hair before school. I put on my white and blue dress and grabbed my lunch from my mom before running out to get on my bus. The entire day at school, my teachers would give me a dollar to celebrate my birthday since we weren't allowed to have cupcakes or treats.
When I got home from school that day, I had $10 to spend from the teachers. My dad was waiting for me when I got home and he carried me inside. Later that night, my mom came home and we all went out to dinner. After dinner, we went to the movies and watched Frozen. Once we got home, my parent's walked into the kitchen and started yelling about not having a cake. I heard the door slam closed then the car started and watched my dad drive away.
An hour later I walked over to my mom and asked where my dad was and when he was coming home. Right after she I asked that, she got a phone call. I watched in silence as she started to cry and threw her phone. She picked me up and held me tightly before she took me out to her car and drove me to the store. She bought a birthday cake and a bunch of ice cream. When we got back into the car, my mom put the bags into the trunk and then called her job and told them she couldn't come in for awhile.
Over the next few months my mom was home when I got home and I never saw my dad. The kids at school would all tease me and bully me, but the teachers would put them in time-out when they caught them. Everyday I would come home crying and tell my mom about what the kids said, but she always told me that kids are mean because they are jealous of what we have. I was confused, so I just assumed she meant they were mean to me because of how much attention I was getting from my mom.
*Two Years Later*
Now, I'm seven. It's been two years since my dad passed away and my mom started dating a new man. At their wedding, I met James's son Jayden, who was six years older than me. At the wedding party, my mom told me to go play with Jayden, so I walked over to him and told him he had to play with me. He immediately got upset and started to yell at me. I started to cry and ran to tell my mom, but my mom just told me that boy's are mean to you because they like you and if he's mean then it mean's he already think's of me as his sister.
We ended up moving in with James and Jayden. James was a cop and had a big house. Everyday when I came home from school it was only me and Jayden since my mom and James were at work. I would always walk into Jayden's room with my Barbie's and ask him to play with me, but he always ignored me and waved me away as he played videogames with his friends.
When he waved me away I would sit on his floor and quietly play with my Barbie's alone until my mom got home. My mom started to teach Jayden how to drive when she got home, so she would take me to get McDonalds so I would stay quiet in the backseat as he drove. When we got home later that night, my mom put me to bed before she and James went to their bedroom.
I slept for hours until I woke up in the middle of the night. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the light before peeing. When I flushed the toilet, I washed my hands and walked into the hallway; only to see Jayden's bedroom light on. I looked over at the clock and saw that it was two in the morning. Confused about why he was awake so late, I walked to his door and poked my head in. I saw him sitting at his desk watching people wrestle as the girl was screaming, that's when I noticed he was playing with something. I tried to step back but tripped over our cat. When I stood back up, I tried to look into his room again but he was standing right in front of me. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into his bedroom and locked the door before he looked at me.
